Subject: Should I be running more than trails?
I am a marginal runner but I love to run trails. Partly because they are easier on my knees (I love mud running) and partly for the beauty of the run. The park I run has a lot of hills so it is hard to avoid all of them when I try to take an easy day or try to develop sustained speed.  I run with a heart rate monitor to track my efforts, but I'm not sure I'm getting everything I could out of my workouts. I can swim lap after lap in the pool, but I quickly get bored running a track. I could use some help/insight, any ideas?

Running trails is great but if you are planning to do a race that will involve running on pavement or concrete sidewalks I would do some of your runs on these surfaces prior to racing just so your body is used to it.  I learned this lesson after training for my first marathon, running all my training runs on dirt roads and then racing in the city on pavement... my legs and feet were not happy for the first ten miles.

X2, except I was training for my first 1/2 marathon. I made this same training mistake and I don't plan to do it again.

I also enjoy trail running, but you do need to get out on the road. I can push just as hard either way but you will have no idea how fast you can run on the road. My times per mile vary 1:30-2:00min/mile trail vs road. Much faster on the road because it tends to be flatter, and you use less energy stabilizing yourself. Trail runs are great especially for your longer runs.
