Extreme Veteran 613![]() ![]() | Subject: SLAP tear in left shoulder....Long story short, crashed on the bike back in early June two weeks out from IMCDA. Shoulder was quite tender as a result, but I wasn't going to (and didn't) let it stop me from completing my IM (dammit!). It has become progressively worse thruout the summer to the point where I cannot swim anymore. Finally went to the ortho yesterday and he is pretty sure I have a SLAP tear in my labrum and maybe a rotator cuff tear. I go in for an MRI (with contrast) next Tuesday. Anyone out there ever done this to themselves? The doc says recovery is slow, but the prognosis is good. Anxious to hear some first-hand accounts..... |

Extreme Veteran 700![]() ![]() ![]() Tucson | Subject: RE: SLAP tear in left shoulder....Yup, been there. Did it weightlifting...weird feeling when your shoulder partially dislocates. Interestingly I had no pain, just the fact that it would keep happening I decided to do something about it. I waited 5+ months before I had surgery (under the watchful eye of my dr). That was May, and I started swimming in Aug (breaststroke & kick drills only). Did therapy for about 2.5 months. Doc says the shoulder is still pretty tight considering how little he did. I can swim fine, a few quick jerks in certain directions still provide a bit of tingling pain, but nothing serious (or that requires any type of med). I started doing easy shoulder workouts at the gym and she is definitely sore, but nothing unusual. Depending on how bad you tore it, which you'll learn from the MRI, will depend on the extent of recovery. Unlike my rt shoulder, I was far more conservative in rehab because I wanted to get back to doing tris. I was told that I was highly likely to stretch out the sutures and the shoulder again (I'm also hypermobile w/multi-direction instability) and would have to go through the surgery again. Hopefully not before I manage to damage some other joint in my body. 2 feet down, 2 shoulders down.....maybe knees next??? |

Master 1324![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Rochester, NY | Subject: RE: SLAP tear in left shoulder....Yep. SLAP tear of the left shoulder. Partial Labrum tear. AKA the bicep tendon. Interestingly, the MRI was not conclusive. It had healed up enough to sit down on the bone, so the contrast dye did not get underneath the flap. It was the surgeon's physical examination that made the diagnosis. Once he got in there during the surgery, he found I had torn it half way off the bone. Surgery fixed the tear. No rotator cuff damage. In a sling for about 4 weeks. PT helped get range of motion back through about 3 months. Then you can begin to build some strength back. You'll be fully atrophied on that side. You'll have most strength back in 6 months. But it will probably be a full year before you're fully back to pre-injury level. |

Extreme Veteran 787![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Glendora, CA. | Subject: RE: SLAP tear in left shoulder....Hey Grandhavenbill: I didn't have the SLAP tear, but a lot of shoulder damage. Had surgery in February and was back in the pool in June (very short swims - 200 to 300 yds). Doing IM AZ in 30 days. 2 small Labrum tears Shoulder instability (basically molly bolted the shoulder) Bone spurs the size of thumbnail Full tear on top tendon Removed part of collar bone Removed underside of acromion Repaired the AC ligament Cut off end of acromion What was originally suppose to be arthroscopic surgery turned into open shoulder surgery. The doc came in to the prep area the morning of surgery and told me after looking at the MRIs more closely that he was going to go open shoulder because of the issues. It was suppose to be a 1 hour surgery, but turned into a 3 1/2 hour deep sleep for me. I now have a beautiful 4" incision. Post Surgery: Stayed overnight because of the amount of work they did on the shoulder. Glad I did. Used LOTS of ice and followed perscribed painkiller regime. Slept in an recliner for about 3 weeks at night.....did take naps on the bed with lots of pillows propping up my shoulder. PT started about six weeks after surgery.....real easy manipulation of the shoulder followed by ice. About 3rd session.....real light weights. So I gave you a lot of details here because I had a REAL messed up shoulder. My point is that even worse case scenarios can not be all that bad. It will slow you down for a bit. But, listen to your body....if something hurts....STOP! And listen to your physical therapist. I was conservative on my recovery and it helped tremendously. Best of Luck and hope that you heal!!!! Member 16 Chattanooga, TN | Subject: RE: SLAP tear in left shoulder....I think I am in the same boat. Crashed bike in June. Hit the deck at about 27MPH! Hit hardest on my hip but the entire left side took a shock. My left shoulder has strength and rotation issues. Going to see the DR to see what they say soon. Its been months and it doesn't seem to fix itself. |
