Subject: My quads are angry at me....
I gave it all I had at my first half marathon yesterday, but now I'm in a lot of pain. Quads are really sore. stairs are a huge challenge. What is the best way to aid the recovery process? Would massage or ART be a good idea at this point?

Thanks!

Massage, for sure, and maybe ART as well if you have specific hot spots.

After my first HIMs, the massage 1-2 days post race made all the diff!

Congrats on the 13.1 run and thank your Quads.

Cheers, -Sunny

Congrats on your first half!!

To help with recovery, I use The Stick, and also try to get moving around as much as possible.  A light spin on the bike or a swim usually helps me with muscle soreness.

Having trouble walking down stairs?  Been there done that.

I got over it with massage, stretching and Advil.

There is a really good yoga pose for stretching the quads, but I foget it's name.

You get on your knees with your toes pointed behind you and slowly sit back.  It uses your body weight to help the stretch and hits your calves as well as your quads.  The further back you sit and the more you relax, the deeper the stretch.

oh yea and +1 on the stick.  It hurts so good

If it's only the day after the half mary, I would recommend ice bathing still and doing your own light massage. I would save the ART or Rolfing for a few more days (you might not be able to handle the work right now for it to be really effective).

It might hurt, but walk around a bit to warm them up, then massage with your hands (or use the Stick) and stretch - several times a day, especially if you have a desk job.
