NOVA - Ironic for an Endurance Athlete
Subject: National Marathon, DC

Ok, so I am getting addicted to exercise and the challenges of racing.  I have a list of goals for 2009.  One of them was to finish a 10 miler in 1:39 or better.  Now I am thinking about trying to do a winter 10 miler, and try to qualify for the National Marathon on March 21, 2009.  (This is 11 days after my 40th birthday).

1. Am I crazy?  I have been doing the "tri-thing" for about 3 months.  Before that, I was pretty sedentary.  I have gone from 11 minute miles at the end of a sprint, to 9:39 pace in my last sprint.  I feel like I can maintain a 10 minute mile or better for a pretty long time.

2. Does anyone have a suggestion of a qualifying race before the deadline for the National Marathon?

Thanks in advance!

I would consider posting this in the Triathlon Talk forum, actually.

Agree with FirstTimeTri. Post there, or in the state-specific threads (The VA or MD threads might get you more hits than the DC one). No one actually talks about triathlon in CoJ (mostly just sex, food and politics, and then more sex - ya know, the stuff that REALLY matters )

Moved here to TriTalk to get you a better response.

  1. No crazier than the rest of us. However, your logs don't show a whole lot of training. You have exactly 180 days until the marathon, but I have no idea where you are now.
  2. Looks like the marathon qualifying standards are pretty liberal, all you need is a decent 10K. Find one close by and go for it, might be a good test to see if you can/should be training for the marathon.

I am registered for the National Marathon; will be my first full marathon (provided I can get my weekly volume and long-run distances to appropriate levels).

As Bear said, the qualification standards are pretty easy. If you are in the DC area you can do the MCM 10k Oct 26 or the Jingle-all-the-way 10k on Dec 14 , pop one of those in less than 65 minutes and you are good to go.

If you are looking for more of a destination thing, you could do the half-mary at Las Vegas (Dec 7), Tucson (Dec 7) or Phoenix (Jan 18), half-mary qual time is 2:30.

edit to add: this will be 39 days after my 40th!

interesting you have to run a 5 hour maraton to get into the race that has a 6 hour time limit?
