I was trying to find a hypocriphal tale I had previously seen on the internet. The tale went along the lines of a couple of Hibs fans were thrown in prison during the 1979 Scottish cup final second.replay. A policeman informed them that Arthur Duncan (Hibs player) had scored the winner in extra time but failed to mention it was an own goal. Please also note that tragedy of this tale includes the last time Hibs won the Scottish Cup was 1902. The Boston Red Sox jinx was a mere blip.

Umpteen searches proved fruitless, indeed I was somewhat startled at how few results I got for the word hypocriphal. Even more frustrating was the word was not showing up as a genuine word on google. Several bizarre spellings later things were getting even worse. Finally found the article after dropping hypocriphal from my search and discovered my mistake.

I'm still struggling to believe the word is apocryphal and not hypocriphal - so much for my education

Apocrypha - means "hidden things" in Greek... An apocryphal story is one in which the validity of the author or authenticity can not be verified (in other words, hidden). Geez, and English is my second language

Thanks Frank. I used to holiday in France and have a meal with a French couple who were both English teachers. The long and obscure words they would use was fascinating. Why can people with English as a second language speak it so much better?

As an aside, my mother in law (born and bred in Scotland) stayed in California for a couple of years where she was congratulated on her English.

Hibs are a soccer team in Scotland. Full name is Hibernian, they play in the semi-final of the Scottish cup on Saturday so are reasonably close to breaking the 103 year losing streak.

An own goal is scoring against your own team, so Arthur Duncan's goal was for Rangers and meant that they won the cup.
