I have a pretty healthy diet with a good mix of meats, fish, salads. I Eat oatmeal or a good cereal and 1-2 bananas every day. I am not a yogurt fan so I don't really do smoothies. I currently do not take vitamins or any supplement. At 5'8" and 158 pounds I could still lose another 5-8lbs. Pretty new to tri but have been  a runner most of my life (44 years old now). Feeling some of the aches in my joints from years of abuse and also muscle fatigue. I take at least 1-2 days off now that my miles on the bike and run are increasing.

My question: Should I use AMP or some other kind of supplement post workout to help speed recovery. I see people mention Designer Whey, would that help?  Would glucosamine and chondroitin help with some of the "lubrication" issues in my joints. Also looking for just a good recommended vitamin.

If you eat a good diet, I would not start worrying too much about supplements now.  Just continue to eat well (including post-exercise) and give your body a chance to adapt to the new/increased workout loads with appropriate rest & recovery.

My coach is constantly trying to get me to join the supplement crowd. I've never bought into it and don't seem to have suffered too much. I just get everything those things give you through food at a much reduced cost. To each his own though, she swears by them.

She's now trying for oxygenated alkaline water -  I think I'll stick with the tap.

x2 on both of the replies so far.
You mentioned wanting to recover faster... in which case a lot of people would recommend eating something with protein in it after your workout (within the hour) because it helps with muscle recovery. I like the Clif Builder Bars or honestly, just a regular meal if it's time to eat.

I'm a big believer in getting your nutrients through healthy food choices.

I like endurox or chocolate milk as recovery drinks.  Endurox is easier for me to stomach after a long workout.  Especailly if I am overheating.

As for a vitamins.  I think everyone could bennifit from a multi-vitamin and a fish oil pill.  And as far as I'm concerned the generics are just as good as the name brands so go with the cheapest.

Here is a link to a section of the mens health website where they explain supplements.  They tell you what the studys show to be beenifits and risks of different supplements.  It also has a list of syptoms that will show you what suplement is reported to help with.

Thanks everyone and I read up more on the supplements link. Going to keep it simple for now as it looks like I am already doing most of the things you guys said to do. I try and eat something after the workout, always lots of fluid (water or sports drink). I think I'll add a good multi vitamin. During the long runs or bikes I add in some gu gels (orange). I want to read up a bit more on glucosamine. At 44 I have a lot of mileage on this body and I feel it in the morning.
