Subject: Oly nutrition

I have completed 2 sprints and will be doing my first olympic distance Aug 1st.  I was wondering what kind of refueling is recommended for this distance.  Obviously the longer the race the more nutrition necessary but any suggestions?  I know that in a sprint very little if any is needed...  I am not sure about what is suggested for Oly's to half-ironman races...

Oly - Sports drink on the bike with perhaps a gel or 2 (or equivalent), especially if you prefer water.  Sports drink or water on the run with perhaps a gel.  Not really too much different than a sprint.

HIMs are MUCH different.  This is where race nutrition really starts to matter.

Sprint: I basically take nothing.  No calories; maybe a few sips on the bike or run to wet my whistle.

Oly: I took one gel on the bike, a little sports drink, and water on the run.  I was going sufficiently hard on the bike and run that I really didn't feel like eating or drinking that much.  I had no nutrition issues that I'm aware of.

my first oly is this weekend (july 12) and i plan on going with one bottle and (max) 2 gels for the entire event.

This is a very individual question so it will be difficult for any of us to provide relative info for you specifically.  Also, the weather, what you eat the morning of, the night before, the week before will all have an affect

For an Oly, I have 1 aerobottle of water and a small amount of gatoraid (or only use gatoraid at supported stops if the event is supported?)  I will take 1 gel after being on the bike and comfortable for a few minutes, and take a second one about 3/4 way through the bike.  I don't take anything with me on the run.

Just for referance in a sprint, I have a 1/2 aerobottle of water or gatoraid and I carry 1 gel but have yet to use one.  Nothing else.

For an Oly, I do sports drink with one or two gels on the bike. I pick up water and/or gatorade on the run as needed.
