In T1 looking for my Schwinn Huffy
Subject: Swimming and shoulder

About a month ago, I did a dumb thing and swung off a rope into a river (did a nice cannonball though...good water displacement)...unfortunatlely, I tweaked my shoulder a bit while hanging for dear life on the rope.

Initially, it didn't feel like much of a problem (just a little sore).  But now I keep aggravating it while swimming...I've skipped a few swims to try to shake it, but just comes back next time I get in the water.

Question: I'm reluctant to stay out of the water too long given some upcoming races and I don't think there's any structural damage (note: I'm not a doctor, I just play one on BT).   So I've been following the HTFU advice of my friends - who, coincidentially, don't have any shoulder problems.

Has anybody dealt with nagging shoulder issues in the pool?  If so, would be curious to your approach and hear about any drills that help maintain swim conditioning when dealing with this.  Thanks

Shoulder problems can hang around FOREVER in swimming. I would recommend doing other strokes that don't hurt the shoulder, kicking sets, drills, etc until the shoulder is workable. Injuries stink. Good luck.

Get it looked at.  Don't mess with the shoulder.

There are some different exercises you can do with some surgical tubing, but you should probably see an orthopedist

Yesterday was my last PT day for my shoulder.  It has been dislocated 2x in the past (both of them happened 15+ years ago).  But I am still suffering.  The PT I was given has reduced the pain and occurance significantly.  However, if it really hurts, you need to get it checked out to make certain you get the right PT (if necessary) to fix it.

Shoulder stuff can be wicked painful and the sooner you get it checked, the sooner you can be on the road to recover.  Trust me on this one.

First and foremost, go get it checked out by a doctor.

I understand the HTFU ideology and agree with it at times.  However, shoulder issues and swimming are never a good combination.  I've never actually "done" anything to hurt my shoulders but spent 10 years doing PT exercises to strengthen them so I could swim.

They may just give you some exercises to do or tell you to rest it but better safe then sorry.

Like others posted here, shoulder injuries can stick around forever w/ swimming.

Best of Luck and keep us posted w/ how you are doing!
