Hey everyone,

A guy I know is selling the above mentioned bike for approx $450. I am new to triathlons and have no experience when it comes to shopping for bikes besides the fact I need a 52cm frame. I took the bike out for a test run and it felt and functioned fine. Besides some dirt on the frame it looks pretty new considering it’s around a 1996 model. The guy said it was given to him by a friend as a gift and it has been in the garage after one season of riding on it. Is this a bargain, reasonable deal or a rip off? What would you expect to pay for a bike like this (sorry I don’t have a photo so just based on the description I gave).

$450 seems high for a 13-14-year-old bike, particularly considering the technical advances during that period. Would have to have a lot more information before the value could be ascertained.

Brand new Trek 1.2 is ~$800.

Not much of a deal in my opinion. I bought a new 1995 Trek 1200 for $500 as a year end deal in the fall of 1995. Sold it for $200 in 2000. It was still in good condition.

Anything more then $100 is too much.

$100.00 tops and it'd better be in darn good shape for that price.

That's not even in the ballpark assuming the bike has the original components on it... would even be a bit high if all the components were upgraded.

I'd say walk away from this one, or at most offer the actual value... $100.

And, how do you know you need a 52cm frame? Assuming that you're saying a 52cm seattube, the top tube varies quite a bit from brand to brand, the setback from the crank center will vary, the seattube angle willl vary, and so on; so one might fit another may not.

He had the bike given to him and now he wants $450 for it.  I'm glad you referred to him as 'a guy I know' rather than a friend of mine.
