Subject: Help me "trust" my plan
I am using the BT beginner half iron plan for a race that is 83 days away on Nov 8.  This is my first of the distance and I need to make sure I do not need to do more.  I just started a new job today and I am afraid of burn out by over training and actually working ( I was laid off 8.5 months ago).  everyday I just have a swim scheduled I want to run or bike just to get some miles and I am always wanting to add minutes when i do.

Have you looked at the plan over the next 12 weeks?  Can you see how the volumes build week-to-week leading you up to long runs and long rides consistent with the 70.3 distance?  Can you imagine how you'd feel if you tried doing those volumes this week and every week between now and the race?

What would be the impact of adding a few extra miles to the current workout?  How will it set you up for the next workout?  The plan may intentionally keep your ride to an hour today so you are fresh for a tempo run tomorrow.  If you add 15 minutes today, are you going to hit the tempo run as hard as you could have if you'd followed the plan?

Make sure your intensity is consistent with the workout plan.  You may find you can be closer to the top of Z2 than the bottom of Z2 during the ride instead of thinking you should go an extra 15 minutes.

I felt the same way at the beggining of IM training a few months ago.  I am REALLY happy I did what I was told and just stuck to the timing called for.  I would be a pile of garbage if I had tried to slam more in.

Too many of my friends heard me say "Trust the process"

I too felt like I wasn't doing enough, but I held back and kept my HR low and all that stuff, and then every so often I'd hit a workout that was awesome - like 13 miles at very close to my normal Half Marathon race pace while staying Zone 2 the entire time.

Trust the plan.  I followed the Beginner HIM plan at the beginning of the year and did back-to-back HIM's in June and July (5:24 & 5:15).  Since I was able to complete the Beginner HIM plan, now I stepped up to the Intermediate plan, and believe me you... I'm glad I did the Beginner first as I would not be able to have just jumped up to this plan.

If you still want to add a little, add a few extra miles on the bike or a few 100 meters in the pool ... but don't mess with the running.  Trust me
