heel dips for calf/achilles pain works wonders. about the only one of those i've had to address. I had quad pain before, but that just required an additional stretch each day to fix.

I have friends who swear by the shortened taper - they only do about 7-10 days prior to an IM rather than the 2-3 weeks that you normally seem to see - and they typically race in the 11-12 hour range

I also liked t he dead legs theory...go long and easy.  we'll see! I have my 20 miler this weekend so I was getting desperate when massage, rolling, and stretching wasn't helping. Oh and that pesky rest thing.

+ 1 for the heel dips. I've been doing them for years now as simple preventive maintenance. I'm also starting to look into the shortened taper. I always feel really sluggish on race day. I felt best at a cycling event I did this summer on only a few days rest right in the middle of my peak weeks.

I've always done a short taper, you don't need but a few days.  Too much time off and you actually lose fitness.  for cycling i usually do a pretty legit interval/TT workout the day before and take the day two days before the race completely off.
