Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Our local paper had the following article in it: What will they do if it gets much worse? CINCINNATI (AP) -- Health officials in Cincinnati say people should avoid swimming in parts of the Ohio River where an outbreak of pond scum is making the water appear greener than usual. People rarely swim in the river along southwest Ohio's border, but boating and water skiing is a popular activity there. Officials say contact with the algae can cause skin and eye irritation and intestinal illness that also can affect pets that swim in the river. Experts say pond scum is most likely to develop in warm weather in slow-moving water, and that description fits the Ohio River in August. Some cities get their drinking water from the river, but officials say the algae is removed during the purification process and does not pose a threat. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just don't drink it. : ) Besides, it's not the scum I'm worried about. It's the channel catfish the size of VW bugs that raises concern! ![]() |

And with all the nastiness at the bottom of that river, there may be some 2 headed ones down there. |

No, let's NOT think about it. Ignorance is bliss. Let's just so swim and not worry about the water. I think what matters the most is that we all swim fast enough that we won't be breakfast for a 50 pound catfish. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I took my bike to my LBS for a tune up on Saturday, and the owner says "Are you worried about getting some kind of crazy Amoeba Protazoa in the Ohio muck. I know a guy whose brother nearly died after ingesting something at a lake swim tri." I replied with "Thanks, as if I didn't have enough else to worry about, maybe now I should bathe in and ingest bleach when I get out of the river." |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I just got the low down on the algae bloom up river from the lab guy here at work. He says this bloom is about 15 miles long and 8 feet deep and is of the toxic variety, not good. The good news is that it should not reach here until late next week, unless we get a huge amount of rain to push it down here faster. He did say algae densities are actually quite low in the area. I did tell him about the concern for the swim and he would let me know if anything changes. Just to throw out some numbers for the river. Water temp is 81.51 our temp probe is deeper than normal so you could add a degree at the surface. raw turbidity is 10.49 very low raw ph 7.70 river velocity is 0.2 mph slow real slow You just about can't beat these conditions for a river, but remember it is still just a river, and I don't eat catfish out of it. By TIM PARADIS, AP Business Writer, 25 August 2008 The recent findings pose a special concern for the Loisiville area of the Ohio River becuase of the upcoming Ford Ironman competition to be held there next Sunday where participants will swim 2.4 miles in the Ohio River. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I do remember last year when the flooding was so bad & current was really strong we arrived to the swim start area & the docks has signs posted advising NOT SWIMMING during high rain or flodding because of sewage run off. EWW! No parisites or other problems to speak of, I am now thinking I will swim a bit faster than I had planned b/c I really, really, really freak out about the wildlife in the lakes/rivers etc. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() haha.. come on people.. Think about it.. you all go to lakes and swim, tube, ski, and dive and really don't think about this stuff.. don't think about it now. Just get in, swim, and get out. I have seen... well make that bumped into some very large fish in fresh water, but if you see / feel one, you have other issues you need to handle... like covering the 80+ feet of water between you and the surface....or getting out of the holes in the bank. ![]() ![]() No need to worry about this stuff. I fear the bike and run much more than anything we will face in the water... including ![]() Kenny |
