Subject: coverting a triple to double

I'm looking to convert my 9 speed triple to either a 9 speed double or 10 speed double.  Anyone want to confirm or correct what I need to do this.

to a double 9 speed. Need:

  1. crank
  2. left STI

Should/Could replace: FD(or does this have to be replaced?)

to a double 10 speed.  Need:

  1. crank
  2. right and left STI
  3. chain
  4. cassette

Could/should

  1. RD
  2. FD

Thanks.

If we are talking Shimano or SRAM, you will need the items below.  I'm not sure about Campy.

All you really need for a double 9 speed conversion is a double crank.  Actually you should really replace the bottom bracket too, since for a triple it is slightly longer.  The left STI will work for a double or triple.  Front Deraileur does not have to be replaced, just readjusted.

10 speed conversion, you need everything listed including the bottom bracket and deraileurs.

Stay with the 9 speed, the chain is slightly stronger and will last longer for the most part. IMHO

to a double 9 speed. Need:

  1. crank
  2. BB

to a double 10 speed.  Need:

  1. crank
  2. right STI
  3. chain
  4. cassette
  5. BB

You can do it with the lists above; personally I wouldn't bother unless some of that stuff is worn out and you need to replace it.  IMO that money is better spent elsewhere (or being saved for a new bike ).

thanks for the replies guys.  I was assuming bb replacement with the crank.

I didn't know I didn't need replace the left shifter.

The reason I'm replacing is that I'm really really hating on my triple right now.  I have to adjust the FD all the time, shifting is horrid, constant rubbing, etc.

thanks.

I'm currently going through the same issues as you, with my triple. I hate it! I'm not gonna bother converting my bike...but my next one, will definitely NOT have a triple crank.

One thing that you can do if you don't use your small ring is adjust (or have the LBS do it) the limit screws so you effectively have a double.  That can often take care of the poor shifting and derailleur rubbing.

Yes, you can just tweak the inside set screw on the fr. der. and "lock out" the small.  Then just adjust the tension on the fr. der. cable and you will have effectively created a double.

Shimano triple roads are notorious for being a total pain in the azz.  I hated working on them.
