Subject: Possibly traveling to Colorado next June.....looking for advice

Here's the short of it.....

I'm a RN and my wife and I (along with our son who will be 6 1/2 by then) will be doing travel nursing starting next June.   Essentially i can go anywhere i want to and work and live for 13 weeks at a time.

The one place we both have wanted to visit has been Colorado.   Everything we read says this is the place for us.   Not counting biking....we both love camping, hiking, and any outdoor activities.

Now, what i'm curious about is where we might start researching to visit and potentially live for 3 months.   Hell, we are open to also looking into a permanent home away from here in Florida that we've both known all our lives essentially.  That is kinda the purpose behind travel nursing...to look for somewhere to live away from Florida.

So what we would like is somewhere that has an active biking, camping, hiking, outdoor activities community.   Somewhere VERY family friendly and oriented so we have a good place for our son.   We prefer to stay out of a big city...we want a more small town feel.   A hospital nearby is also a must as i have to have somewhere to work.

Last night we had a talk about looking for somewhere to visit this January so we could scope out a potential spot to travel to come June.   I know theres a huge Winter vs Summer list of activities and way of living.   But we both are open to trying it out.

So anyone got some places we can research and potentially consider to visit in January and perhaps even move to in June for a few months?    Smaller town/city thats active that we would enjoy?   I know theres someone out there that lives in a place like this.    Anyone?

Thanks ahead of time for the responses.

Summit and Eagle counties both have nice medical centers and I believe Grand county may as well.  These are all centered around ski resorts which also offer mountain biking/hiking in the summer and all have extensive paved path systems for cycling along with large road cycling communities with numerous organized rides (Copper Triangle, Triple Bypass, Courage Classic). Hiking and camping are out your back door at a moments notice into all sorts of different areas whether you prefer car camping or backpacking.  Heck, you can even do winter hut treks!  You can look at some of the more outlying communities in the counties (Kremmling, Grand Lake etc) to be even further out but still be able to commute to work.

economically speaking, is there a big difference in $$$$ to live?    i realize the economy stinks right now and real estate is down, but i'd like some opinions on places that are reasonable $$ wise.

i've read that Durango is really expensive....real estate wise.

Yes, living in the mountains is more expensive than the west slope or front range.  If you can swing it, a summer up there would be great.

As far as the front range goes, Colorado Springs, Denver, Boulder, Ft. Collins are all great places to live and there are little towns in between them as well.  There is no end to the amount of hospitals in the Denver Metro area (at least 13 off the top of my head), as well as another four in the Longmont/Boulder/Louisville area.  You can live a bit more cheaper down here but still easily get away to the mountains for camping, hiking, etc.  This area also has tons of tris of all distances, as well as running races, etc.  You could easily race every weekend.

I live in Highlands Ranch and love it.  It's very family oriented with plenty to do and lots of places to train.  But there are lots of great places to live depending on what you want or like.

Well, most of the resort areas are going to be expensive but if you go to some of the outer towns like Kremmling, Eagle etc it will be better.  Grand Junction or just outside might be another option.  I guess it depends on what is expensive to you.  It's cheaper for me to live here than it was in Northern Virginia but I haven't a clue what living expenses are like in your neck of the woods currently.
