Subject: Making tri bike ligal is draft legal races???

I am looking to upgrade to a new bike, I love the p2c and would love to get it but this will be my only bike for racing. Therefore I would like to know if there is anything I can do to make the p2c or any tri specific bike legal for draft legal races.

I realize that if this is possible you would have to change some parts on the bike...if so...what parts? put smaller aero bars on??

Thanks, any information woudl be apreciated.

Depends entirely on what the rules for the race that you will be participating in require.  In ITU races this means drop bars and aero extensions that do not go a prescribed distance in front the of the handlebars.  But there are very few tris that follow ITU rules ......... and even fewer ITU races that allow amateurs within them.

Do you have races in mind, and if so, have you looked at what their rules dictate?

I got hit on this 2 weeks ago.  Showed up with my P3 and wasn't allowed to check it in because it was "illegal".  Luckily, I was able to get my wife on the phone to bring up my road bike.

It will be a matter of you checking the rules for the races you will be doing.  Some smaller races, that aren't sanctioned, may not have specific bike rules, others will.  Just make sure you know before you sign up or pay...

I guess I didn`t do much research on the tri races around here so I am not sure if their are any rules or drafting in any of them. I guess I just sorta jumped the gun before doing any more research on that side of things.

I was just mostly curious if their was a race I wanted to go in that was draft legal(which to me means no tri bikes), if I could modify my tri bike to be able to go in it...Can you put drops on a tri bike? I`m assuming no...

Here's Chrissie Wellington's (pro female) P2C setup with drops.

You can modify the P2C to be suitable for draft legal by adding drops, short aerobars, sti shifters and IIRC, moving the wheel back slightly (I think there is a rule about how tight the wheel can be to the seatpost - may have dreamed this though).

However, I believe that currently the Atlantic Canada, there is one draft legal race and it is the elite junior race (this year the pre-Canada Games race, next year the Canada Games race).

Beyond that, there are a couple of provinces that have draft legal races (Quebec and Alberta I believe are the main ones) but they require an elite card in order to register.
