Do most who race Half Ironman distance use HR monitors for racing and training vs RPE?

I always go by RPE for any race.  Doesn't hurt that I lost my HRM after Boston in April.

(Even with it, I'd never determine my pace based on it, still went by effort level and feel unless it was really out of whack).

I had my HRM on, but ignored it.  Maybe to my downfall.  I felt good, pushed hard on the bike, and was wasted on the run.  I may have been better to follow it a little better.

If you are one to push too hard, or go too easy, then an HRM could help.

Also, RPE works better after some experience IMO.  I could probably do it now, but I have several HIM's behind me, and would have better race strategy, than go "all out"...

I like the HRM but that is because it reminds me how I am doing and prevents me from going out too fast. I know some races once my HR got too high for too long I could not get it down and I really dragged.

RPE for me. If you can't associate your RPE to a rough HR range from your training, I would suggest sticking with the HRM just to help keep you in check. If you decide on RPE, I would encourage building effort within each leg and pushing one less gear than you think you can push on the bike.

Good Luck!

I'm planning on going HRM for my first tri coming up.  Mainly because I do not have a good feel for RPE yet, nor do I have the RPE zones memorized.
