Subject: 2009 Schedule - too much?

First off, hello everyone.  My name is Tim and I am addicted to triathlons.

Ok, got that off my chestSmile.  I am a clyde that hovers around 205-210 and have one Sprint under my belt.  I am plannning my tri's for next year and this is what I'm thinking.

May - Spint, June Oly, July Oly, August Oly, Sep Half Ironman

Is this a little ambitious for a beginner/clyde?  Should I skip one to recover before I try a half?  Physically I think I'd be ok but I don't want to get to the half and have nothing left.  How many tri's do you all do during the season?

 Thanks for your input.

My tri schedule for next season looks like this (so far) - Sprint in June, HIM in July, and an OLY in August...that's it for me, I think. I'm a beginner too...last year was my first year at doing triathlons...did 1 sprint and 1 oly. Next year, I'm doing those same 2 races..but adding in the HIM in between them. This schedule will keep me pretty busy through the summer. Then...if I have any energy left...I might shoot for a half marathon in Sept. If I'm not feeling up to doing the half mary, I'll probably just sign up for a 5 or 10k in the fall.

If you think you can handle the kind of schedule you've proposed for yourself, I say go for it. For me...it's a matter of cost, so that's why I have to pick and choose only a few races. Triathlons are quite expensive in my area - typically running about $100 per race. I earn a meager income, which means limited number of races. I suppose if I had all the time and money in the world...it'd be a different story.

It depends on your level of fitness and how much time you're willing to commit.  I am also 205-210 and 6'3.  I did 2 sprints and have an X-terra and a 4.1 mile run left for the season.  4 races total for my first year - started training in late June for my first race in August.  I was in decent shape, played team sports but never really been an endurance athlete so this kind of training was new for me and I think I created a decent base for next year.

Next year, my plan is to do a sprint in May, June, July, and September, an Oly in August, the Xterra again in October and race in November.   Depending on how I feel next year will dictate what I do in 2010.  If I  did well in the Oly, I will add another Oly.  If my body and conditioning are good, then I'll train for the HIM the year after.  I just know that I'm not ready for a HIM next year.  I know I have to improve my swim and run before I make that big of a leap.  Anyway FWIW, That's my plan

it doesn't look bad at all. Of course, it all depends on your fitness levels but I don't think that schedule is too agressive at all.

Good luck in your plans

2009 will be my second year of racing:

In the next 12 months, I have 5 sprints, 1 Oly, 1 marathon,  2 Ten milers, 4 10k 2  5k's, a two week trip to New Zealand, 16-18 golf tournaments, 3 local fly fishing trips, 1 cyclocross, two turtle doves, and a nervous breakdown!

Feel better about your schedule?

Wow, that's a busy schedule.  Im going to give it a shot.  I might trade the HIM for a 1/2 or full marathon next year.  I'm doing the Philadelphia half this November, but I'm not sure if I'm going to keep doing marathon type races or not.

Thanks again for you input.

Depends on your current level of fitness, the amount of time you can train, your motivation, etc...

I did 6 events my first year.  About one a month from April to Nov.  3 OLYs, an HIM, 10k run, and I threw a sprint tri in there too...

I would say it's not the number of events you do that could be a problem, but the daily grind of training.  If you think you can train 5-6 days a week for the entire year, you should be fine.
