Subject: The flu and heartrate
It seems every other year I get a flu shot I get the flu. I got in the 1-1/2 hour run this morning but I couldn't keep my heart rate in check doing the aerobic spinervals so I had to give up after a half hour.

I feel guilty, which is weird. Gave it a shot, though.

What does your first sentence have to do with the rest of your post?

Got the flu shot, got the flu, tried to do the scheduled training and couldn't.

It sounded like a logical progression from this end

You don't have the flu if you're out running.

Yes, I'm sure.

Yep, the flu puts you on your arse....  No getting around it.

My understading (but Derek is the doc, I think), they "speculate" on the version of the flu that will be going around this winter.  They inject you with a weakend or dead strain of that flu.  Your body then reactes like it would when any foreign body is introduced (increased temp, fatigue, etc).  But then your body is familiar with that version of the flu, and can combat it better when you get the real deal (hopefully not).

You are just feeling the minor reactions the body has fighting the shot.

BUT, I could be 100% incorrect...  How about THAT for inspiring confidence!

Tell it to my sore self that can't breathe. C'mon, I'm grumbling here.
I also know it's probably just a cold (no fever) but it sounds better if it's the flu. If I'm gonna grumble, I'm gonna do it right.

I know they give a dead version. One year we got a typhoid shot and it wasn't quite dead. 103 fevers and we were all in the ER getting grounded and feeling half dead. That was a week from hell.

Sorry you're feeling so bad. Grumble away.

The flu shot is proteins from the surrounding capsule, not a dead virus.

Therefore it can't give you the flu. It activates your immune system (as intended) and you'll feel icky, sore, achy...but you don't have the flu.
