Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I need some help deciding for those of you that may have already faced this before me. I am thinking about going back for my MBA. I have a B.S.B.A. in Management from Univ of Central Florida. I got that back in 2002. When I was laid off last year, I decided to try a couple classes at the local community college and ended up with a Human Resources Management Certificate. Now, I am looking to go for my Master's. My HR professor suggested Webster's University, because it has a HR in Development program and it is working on my own time. I have 2 jobs right now, so , yes, my time is limited. I thought I might go back to UCF for the Master's, but they only have a standard MBA program with no geared tracks. So, my 1st question is.....if I recieved an MBA from Webster's, will it be worthless as a resume builder or are they becoming more widely accepted? What would you do? My ultimate objective or career path is training and development. Please help!!! Thanks in advance! |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Never heard of Websters U. Is it like a Phoenix or Strayer U?
Basically only online and some in class?
Whatever you choose its an MBA you have to have some regulations when getting an MBA. I got mine about a year ago and I love it. Opens many doors. |

Webster is like Phoenix with a home base in st Louis, MO. I was told it was better then Phoenix since it is non-profit, but it is also costly. I don't want to throw good money after bad, but I think I like the program better at Webster U then UCF. They have 2 campuses here in Orlando, so there is some classroom. If you dont mind me asking....did you get your master's from an online school or a mainstream school? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I went to graduate school at the Rochester Institute of Technology. They had an evening MBA program that met from 6PM-9:15PM; one class per evening. Full time students could finish in 18 months, but it took me three years since I was working full time during the day and was only able to fit in two classes per week and still have enough time to keep up with the reading and homework. I was fortunate that my employer at the time had a tuition reimbursement program, plus I was able to pick up a few bucks a substitute teacher in the evening undergraduate business program. It didn't have any immediate effect on my career. In fact, my undergraduate degree from Purdue has been more of a door-opener for me, probably because it is a more high-profile school. I think that non-resident MBA programs are becoming more accepted over time - most large schools now have evening/weekend type programs. An MBA might open a few doors, but in the end your own talent, abilities and effort are what will determine your success. Quite frankly, coming into MBA school with an undergrad business degree, I found the classes at RIT to be very repetitive of stuff I already knew, and the entire thing ended up feeling like just a ticket-punching effort after the first couple of quarters. Good luck, Mark |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have a BS in Pharmacy and an MBA separated by 7 years in the workforce. The question you must answer is " Why are you getting an MBA?". Do you think it would open doors that are not open now? I did it to get training in logistics and accounting for a director position I wanted. I did mine at a top 25 "bricks and mortar" school in the evening after work each day. I wanted a degree that had some cache (luckily I lived 50 min away from a very good school) to it but I am not sure it really matters unless you are from the top 6 schools. I think what you have done (HR cert) is a better use of your time and money and will pay off if you want to stay in the same field. i would stick with certs and seminars because you will meet more people in your field (networking thats where jobs come from)and it would show continued training. I found my MBA experience less MBAish than I had hoped. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK....Here's what I am trying to do. I have been in accounting much longer then I care to rememeber. It pays the bills. However, my other job, training, is where my true desires are. I am a motorcycle instructor. I love doing it. Since I began teaching I have grown in my position. Last year, i designed a training program for new coach (instructor) candidates. I spend a lot of time taking them under my wing and training them before they go to the state class. Just recently, the office created a new position for Quality Assurance, since the state is getting more strict with the policies. I was asked to be the QA. I go, observe other instructors, and then coach them to correct things they may be doing wrong. I rally would like to take this to a corporate level. However, with the job market being as tight as it is, many places are requireing an MBA for being the Director of training and development. The motorycle job is really pert time. It doesnt offer any benefits, so it is currently not an option to go full time and be able to survive financially.... |

Mainstream as in typical university. I actually got mine at Salisbury University right after I finished my BS. |
