Subject: What is too messy for a Trail Run?

Well, last night was the 3rd in a series of trail races a group of us have been doing.  They have been great fun, but last night was a bit extreme.  It started raining about an hour before the race and continued the rest of the night.  The trails seemed very difficult to say the least, it was walk up hill, walk even slower down the hills, and maybe run a little bit on the flater areas.  Even then I would say I went down more than a dozen times, some times just to a knee/hand to catch my balance, sometimes all the way down, mostly on my tush.  I was taking it easy as I didn't really want to get hurt in a race such as this.

According to my Garmin the race was 3.5 miles (they claim it's close to 4) that put me at a 12:00 per mile (and change) pace.  Much slower than I typically run these races.  Even those that finished first were about 2 minutes slower per mile than in the previous races.  My wife took an hour and 20 minutes to finish, she said by the time she got to parts of the trail it was so sloppy there was no running or even walking, you were going to slip and fall.

I was covered in mud from head to toe after the race, used a nice little mud puddle to get the majority of it off and then a towel to fnish the job.

So, back to my question, at what point would you say, it's too dangerous for me to run, or would you just run it anyway and go at a much slower pace as I did.

Risking injury is one serious thing to consider; damage to the trail is the other.  When the mud dries, is the trail trashed from the race for everyone else using it later?

I've only done a few trail runs and from my experience the crazy sadists who are trail runners think mud is the greatest thing ever.  They are an odd bunch, but fun to race with!  I would run as fast as you feel comfortable running.  It's just like any other training obstacle like heat while running or fast descents on the bike.  You have to feel comfortable with what you are doing and be responsible for your own safety.

It's too messy when you trash the trails leaving them in a worse state then before you ran on them. Same goes for mountain biking.

It was probably too messy, but as long as nobody got hurt, it seems like everyone was careful.  I'm justs getting in to some trail running myself, and it seems like they gung-ho trail people love to get dirty.

and in my experience the Garmin will spit out low numbers during trail running/riding, specially if the trail switchbacks at all, and if you're in a heavily wooded area.

Thanks for the replies.

1.  I thought about the damage to the trail and contacted the race folks to see if they wanted to organize a trail day to go and repair some of the damage that was done.

2.  As far as the distance, that's one of the downsides to the Garmin, it's not real accurate on trail runs/rides.  There were many switch backs, some fairly dense tree coverage and such.  It does tend to read lower, that's why I'm think it's closer to 4 miles.

3.  These races are a tempo/hill workout for me in training for my Half Marathon.  Something different than the same old running and it's only once a month.  My main focus is to have fun and stay healthy so I was very cautious in this race.  Enough so, that my one training partner, who I normally finish a couple minutes in front of, actually finished in front of me by a couple of minutes.

I did an Xterra trail half Mary earlier this year and it rained several inches over nite and thru out the race. It was alot of fun and added to the Xterra feel of the race. It was one long slippery sliding hilly mud puddle race. I was at least 5 minutes slower than compared to a dry day but so was everyone else. Thats not too dangerous you just have go with flow and slow down if needed.
