i'm going to be doing my first triathlon... just doing it for fun so i don't have a tri-suit or anything fancy like that.  just a normal swimsuit.  i feel like this is a silly question but i figure it's better if i know the answer   in the transition area, can i change from swimsuit to bike shorts?  do guys and girls have separate changing areas?  i just thought it might be a little awkward if they do mix guys and girls if people do completely change clothes

nope, whatever you do, don't bare it all in front of everyone.  Triathlon shorts allow you to be able to swim, bike, and run in them.  You should look at a pair of those.

Unless you're doing a full IM with changing tents, there will not be an area to change.  Plan on racing the whole thing in one piece of clothing.  Oh, and nudity is usually a penalizeable offense

Just so you know, a lot of people during sprints wear their bathing suits and then a pair of tri shorts (or just spandexy shorts that dry relatively quick - anything dry fit would do the trick) over. Some people wear the shorts in the water, others will put them on after swimming. If you are doing a sprint, you really don't need to change out of your bathing suit if you are comfortable racing in it

My first tri I wore a regular swimsuit, and slipped on a pair of bike shorts at T1 before putting on shoes.  Then ran with the bike shorts toward the end.

ETA:  I suggest you to go spactate an event before you race.  It'll help you to get an idea of  how things work.

My first sprint tri I just wore my normal cycling shorts and threw a jersey on when I got out of the water.  They give less drag in the water than a floppy swim suit.  I didn't know they even had "tri-shorts" back then so I thought my choices were either my surfing board shorts, my tiny little speedo, or just to wear the cycling shorts.  Out of those three I'd still choose the cycling shorts, they dried pretty quick once I was on the bike and I'm sure no one wanted to see me biking or running in my tiny speedos.
