Subject: need some bike advice-Panasonic, Eddie Bauer or Trek?

Hi All,

I am doing my first tri in four weeks.  I have an Eddie Bauer Mountain Bike (maybe 9 years old) and a 20 year old Panasonic road bike.  I have trained with both and know the Panasonic is lighter -, but it's more difficult to shift-has the old gear shifting where I have to take my hand off the handlebar to shift.  I also have the opportunity to buy a Trek 730 for $100.  I am not fast-only been training since the end of June, but would like to know which bike would be the best to ride.  Is the Trek a good deal?  I am a stay at home mom of four children, so will not be spending big bucks on a bike, even if I do become addicted to this sport! (I LOVE training).
My husband and my oldest son keep saying to me  "you are really into this, aren't you?"

Thanks for the input!
Nichi

I would ride the Panasonic personally. I would spend the $100 on some new tires and maybe cables for the Panasonic. I wouldn't buy another bike.

you really are not quite into it yet.

finish the 1st one, on w/e gear you have, don't spend a dime.  if you like it consider a bike and other gear.

My recommendation is to ride the Panasonic.  Practice shifting and getting comfortable with only one hand on the bars.  Do a couple races and see how you feel about your continued interest in the sport before buying a bike.

Good advice. I can't imagine not liking becoming a triathlete!  I am loving the journey, anyway...
Thanks!
