I saw the swim course map on the Chicago Tri website and was wondering if anyone can confirm that these areas are available to swim in non-race time.

I just wonder if I can go swim it out some weekend and not get hassled by the fuzz.

If it is "off-limits" does anyone have any recommendations for point to point swims in the city that are away from the beaches (to simulate race conditions)?

Thanks in advance.

You cannot swim where the race is held unfortunately.  However, if you go to Ohio Street Beach, on the other side of Navy Pier, you can swim there and it will give you a good idea of what it is like to swim point to point.

People are there all the time swimming.

You can also go to the area just south of North Avenue beach.  There you can climb down the ladders to deep water.  There are guards posted.

Ohio Street Beach is more indicative of the conditions on the race course because of the breaker wall and the boats. You have fewer waves -- the race is usually flat water -- and you get the taste of gasoline in the water. Ahhh just like race day.

Nothing like the taste of diesel first thing in the morning.

I love the smell of diesel fuel in the morning.  Not to mention you get to swim through all the trash that piles up as well from the boaters.  Nothing like swimming through beer cans and bottles floating around and who knows what else.

wonderful, i've never swam in the chicago side of lake michigan but one of my swim habits is to pull water in to my mouth and expell it before i take a breath (a bad habit i've had since high school swimming team) so now I get to look forward to the wonderful taste of gasoline in my mouth.

Thanks for the ohio beach suggestion, i'll check that out.
