Subject: Bike-Run-Swim brick dumb??
I burned a vacation day today to get in a good long brick for my 1st Oly in 11 days.  Unfortunately the local pool doesn't open early. So I did 40k bike (TT position-planned race pace), 2min T2, 10k (run-walk 4min:1min @ planned race pace). Then I stopped at home for ~10min to eat a banana & get my swim bag together.  Felt tired but not wasted by any means.  Felt like I hydrated well during bike & run, and took in calories (3 gels & a Cliff bar).  Walked to pool (1/2mi) & hit the water.  Felt smooth & easy swimming my (admittedly slow) race pace.  Then the badness.  A few leg twinges at 500yd turned into hard toe/calf cramps which stopped me at 600yd.
I have noticed that none of the Sprint or Oly training plans I've seen involve swiming after bike/run.  Now I know why.

not as long as you shower before getting in to the pool.

I think it would be OK if you keep the run and swim relatively short. Swimming when fatigued does not promote good form. I generally will limit my swim distances, whether long or short sets, to the point where my form starts to breakdown. With running, I have been injury prone so I limit my brick runs to a couple of miles. I focus on run endurance on my long run days and try to do that on as fresh of legs as I can.

While I regularly ride long bike distances (did a century last weekend), my long run is only 11k so far.  I've swum 1+mi workouts with relative ease for past few weeks so I mistakenly figured a slow 1500 today would be OK.

Oh well. Lesson learned.  Hopefully no harm done.  At least my next workouts will be shorter while tapering.

I have been trying to swim after every run and bike ride.  It seems to loosen me up.  I do find that if I get dry or overworked I will cramp.  Starts in my feet and can go all the way up my leg.  If I begin to feel the twinge I can usually relax and they will go away.

Most plans don't call for a 3 sport brick because the general concensus is that time is better spent putting quality time into a single discipine.  Come to think of it, theres a lot of athletes that don't think any brick is quality time spent and that you are better to focus on a single sport unless time doesn't allow you to do this.  Confidence seems to be the #1 reason to do a "pre" race, race.

It sure was for me.  Leading up to my 1st tri (sprint) I felt I HAD to do the distances in practice before the real event.  As I've painfully discovered- that emotional luxury may not work so well in training for longer distances.
