Subject: slump?
Hey all, I am training for my first ever Tri (little longer than a sprint) and have been training for 2 months maybe a little more... I have about a month to go before the race and I am so frustrated with how I have been feeling/doing in my workouts... I try not to pay attention too much to my times right now, but they have been getting slower... My 800m swim time added like 2/2.5 min from my best in the last month and my running is slowing down and my legs are bugging me enough that I feel as though I have to save what I have for running and swimming and haven't been doing much biking lately... I am not sure if I need a break or need to work harder or what the deal is?? Any suggestions? Ideas? I realize I am not going to do spectacular in the race, being my first one and all, but I am competative and want to do well... just very frustrated and disapointed... Help?

First of all, welcome to BT.

It is hard to answer your questions without knowing what your training schedule has been like as well as fitness level before recent training, age, other sports experience, etc. It sounds like you are either doing too much too soon or you are not giving yourself adequate recovery. It is important to train with understanding and purpose. This includes knowing your own limitations as well as some basic fundamentals of training. Look at some of the on-line beginner training programs and compare that to what you are doing. Pay attention to rest days.

I agree, could be too much too fast or not enough recovery.  A lot of people need only one rest day a week, but I learned if I listened to my body and took two when I needed it I would come back much stronger and could handle more when I was training.  I also need to move my mileage up on running very slowly.

Make sure you are eating enough and good quality as well. Your body will need it for recovery!

+1
It does sound like you may be doing too much too soon.  Try to pair swimming days with either running or bking so you can have a few days of complete rest, or even small bricks of a shorter bike w/ a short run and you have accomplished 2 in a day. Maybe you do this but not knowing your training this is my best blind suggestion.  That having been said everyone can have a bad week but it kinda sounds like a little burn out.  Good  Luck with your upcoming tri.

I'm following a sprint training program, and sometimes go a little stir crazy with the limited training volume.  Especially on Friday (today!) which is my rest day.  My body really wants to DO SOMETHING!  However, I trust in the plan, and realize that I've been making marked improvements in fitness and exertion level each week so I can tell it's working.  For me, it would be super easy to accidentally over train without an actual written plan.  I prefer the current feeling of, 'I want more!' to the feeling of tired and lethargic from doing too much (which I've felt before in the past).

may not be your situation at all, hard to say, but that's my .02 (and not worth that.  I'm no trainer, just a guy with a keyboard).

I agree with what the others have said above about either too much/not enough recovery

Another thing to consider is varying your training. Perhaps you are simply getting bored with your current schedule. You need to change things up every few weeks to keep up your motivation and focus your efforts.

Try looking at different interval sessions and changing the days that you train/rest. Change your bikes/runs between flat/hills/climbs, try different terrain like trails/sand/grass. Go from indoor swimming to outdoor sea/lakes/rivers.

All the variations will keep things interesting and also prepare you for coping with differences between races.

Another important aspect to consider is the quality of sleep you are getting and also nutrition- a small improvement in either of these equals great improvements in recovery and performance.

Good luck and try to remember that every minute of your training is money in the bank come race day- you won't regret any of it!

Obviously please think about whether you are doing too much first, its a sure way to injury and you don't want to miss your race day!

Hey thanks so much for your advice... in case this helps anyone give me some more...

I am 21 years old, formally a basketball and soccer player - was forced to "retire" due to a foot injury.. which yes, has definitely affected/altered my training schedule from most peoples... it is really swimming/biking focused...  Because of this injury never really got into running so that is the biggest challenge for me... opposite of most. I usually bike a lot of places/errands during the summer so biking should not be an issue come race day... especially since I'll be riding a road bike. Through High School and Freshman/Soph year of College, for the most part,  I worked out 3-4 times a week (lifted and a little cardio/playing open gym/field) or was in season.  I took the last year/year and a half a little slower, worked out some but not as much and spent some time rock climbing for something different...

Here is what I have been attempting to keep up:

Sun: Bike 9 hang out/nap/read on the beach for 3-4 hours and bike 9 home = on mountain bike without suspension (kind of a rest day ... I DO have that issue of always feeling like I need to do something)
Mon: Swim 800m + either 800 timed or swim for 20 minutes and lift
Tues: Long bike = 18-20 miles on my mountain bike (using a road bike for the race)
Wed: same as Mon
Thurs: Run... as tolerated... working my way up i'm close to 3 miles and am about a month away from race day (4.9 miles)
Fri: same as Mon, Wed
Sat: Day off

Maybe I need a switch up? What should I change/how? I try to eat half a protien power bar before/after workouts to help recovery...

A couple of weeks I took an extra day here or there but then feel guilty... My other hobbies are physical as well, kayaking, hiking/backpacking I love to move and be outside... I climbed a 14er on a road trip but took 5 days off prior to that and eased back into things the following week and then wanted to hit it hard and since have just not been able to get things going again...  So, if anyone has more advice, I am all ears! Thanks for your help thus far!

P.S. I'm training for a sprint tri: swim 1/2 mile, bike 17.2/3 and run 4.9
