Apologies to Kim (who has heard the story) and John (who has lived the story) in advance.

Background:
My oldest son (Aidan) comes to lap swim/coaching with me on Wednesdays at Mesquite Groves.
He has all of my athletic and swimming ability, which is to say very little, but when he comes
to lap swim, he swims laps. Given the choice between playing at a neighbor's pool or coming
to lap swim, he'll choose lap swim. He's excited to do the Seville Kid's Tri, which has a 100y
swim, and the most he's swum in "training" for it is 150y.

The story:
Evidently at lap swim recently they've had problems with parents bringing kids who just screw around
in the lanes and then other adults can't lap swim. So, when we showed up on Monday, they had
a "new policy" on a whiteboard by the pool.

Policy: "Children under the age of 14 must take a swim test to show they can swim 500y
continuously."

John points it out to me. I'm mildly irritated and go and talk to the lifeguard person. Then
I talk to Aidan.

"Ok", he says, "Let's get started. How many laps is that?"
"It's 20 laps."
"Ok, I'll start over here."
"Here are your goggles."
"I don't need them, I'm going to do backstroke."

Then, over the course of the next 40 minutes he does 18 laps of "backstroke", which is really
just kicking on his back, 1 lap with a pull buoy (given to him by the lifeguard) and 1 lap
with a kickboard (doing the free style drill to work on your pull).

He completes all 500y, and gets to put his name on the "sheet" of kids allowed to do
lap swim. He's the second name on the list.

Why I'm Proud
#1: His attitude. No complaining. No crying. He just wanted to know what had to
be done, figured out what to do, and started doing it.
#2: It wasn't easy for him. He's like me, and not a good swimmer.
#3: It was over 3x longer than he's ever lap swam before.
#4: He finished.

Thank you for your indulgence in my parental pride.

I also told Kim about a video, the only one I still have in my "saved YouTube links".

For the next time you just can't get out to get a workout in:

Thanks again for your indulgence.
