Do you have stories from places out of the beaten path? Some unusual place to visit when traveling?
I've been traveling a lot for the last 3 years. In my travels I always, always visit a museum. I absolute adore art. I've been to incredible museums in New York, Washington, Boston, Montreal, Paris, Rome, London, Barcelona, Caracas... yes, famous museums...
But I also like to visit uncommon places.
A small museum in Baltimore has haunted me ever since I saw a little ad in one of the hotel tourist guides... The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. I have no words to describe how different this place is. A beautiful building right in front of the Inner Harbor with the most unusual concept for a museum. It goes beyond folk art, it display art from people inspired to creation from the most unusual places, "visions" as they call it. The curators are as creative as the artist finding common themes to arrange the exhibitions.
I would like to hear about other discoveries...

I while back we took a cruise on the Rhine. We visited the Mechanical Music Museum in Rudesheim, Germany (near Mannheim). They had a very interesting collection of music boxes, early player pianos, harmoniums, organs, etc.

Also worth the effort - The island of Lamu, Kenya.  It's like a trip in a time machine.

It's off the beaten track, but the cavern of Cabrespine, France (near Carcassone) is one of the most amazing caves I've ever seen - the main gallery is big enough to hold a basketball arena.

Also worth visiting in the region - Lascaux cavern - the actual cavern is closed to the public, but they have built an exact replica nearby. Our guide turned out the lights and lit his lighter to show us how the paintings were meant to be viewed. In the flickering firelight the animals seem to move.
