Does anyone else live in an area infested by cicadias? What can I do while biking to avoid them? I already seem to ingest my fair share of gnats. I can only imagine when the cicadias are out in full force.... Am I going to have to train inside until they go away?

I dont know how bad they get in VA but in OH (where I am from originally) they were really bad, pretty much all over the place. I would imagine that if you were riding you would want some kind of face protection, not to mention the fact that you will definately want to clean your bike big time after your ride if they are out in force. Think locust storms in Florida....its like that

My father was in Ft. Belvoir, VA when the cicadas came out 17 years ago.  He said it was absolutely disgusting.  And I'm reading the estimate is something like 5-10 per square foot!  Good luck.  Maybe you all want to take a vacation for a bit (away from the mid-atlantic region/northeast!)

You can eat them ....may sound gross but they are low in fat and high in protein. They are considered a delicacy by many people around the world. The European settlers in North America observed the Indians eating them. During the last emergence of Brood X cicadas in 1987, a number of people in Cincinnati and Illinois were reported to have tried deep-fried and stir-fried cicadas. There was also talk of cicada pizzas and cicada candy, and local newspapers printed cicada recipes.

For a good article check out :

I am actually looking forward to seeing them. I live in the city so they really won't affect me.
