I just read this in the April issue of Popular Mechanics:

News Briefs:  Mind over very cold matter.

With only a Speedo for warmth, British swimmer Lewis Pugh set two new records for the most southerly swim-at 65 degrees south latitude, off the Antarctic coast-and for the longest polar swim, covering a mile in 30 minutes, 30 seconds in water just a few degrees above freezing.  Pugh's extensive cold-water training gave him the power of "anticipatory thermogenesis":  The mere sight of cold water sends his body temperature soaring to 101 F.

That last part about his body heating up at the sight of cold water?  What does he do in a restaurant when they pour the ice water?  Take his shirt off?

I'm not sure if this is the same guy I saw swim an entire Norwegian fjord without a wetsuit, starting at a glacier. He was rhapsodizing about how warm it was when he hit a patch that was 50 degrees.
