![]() Swim
Comments: It took a couple of laps to settle in to a nice rhythm. I caught up with the guy in front of me and drafted off him for a lap before I passed him. My swim leg is my weakest of all three sports, as I place in the top third/half of my age group in the bike and run. What would you do differently?: Swim faster? ![]() Transition 1
Comments: OMG -- my stuff was in an inch of water. Thankfully the transition area was on pavement, not dirt or grass, so it wasn't a mudfest. I opted to wear socks, which took a while to put on. I did fine with my new pedals and shoes. I decided to wear my fleece running jacket on the bike, thanks to advice from a BTer -- I was going to be wet anyway, might as well be warm and wet. ![]() Bike
Comments: The race organizers run a lot of MA races and do a good job, but one thing they don't do is time the transitions, so my bike time includes T1. I know I biked faster than 14.5 mph. On the flats I was averaging 17-20. As this was a short race I pretty much gave it all I got. I love my new clipless pedals... What would you do differently?: nada ![]() Transition 2
Comments: I almost couldn't unclip from my pedals. My legs were bright red and freezing... but I made it without fall over in the dismount area. Got running shoes on OK, fingers were numb so tying them was difficult. I started the run wearing my helmet...LOL "Hey, you've still got your helmut on!" I What would you do differently?: remove helmet ![]() Run
Comments: My wonderful running fleece that kept me warm and reduce drag on the bike (I saw/passed many people wearing windbreakers that were acting as sails) was soaked and weighed 10 lbs (or at least felt like it). After running about 100 yds I ditched it in somebody's bushes. My feet were numb and wet. I took nearly a mile to get a rhythm going. Time includes T2 ![]() Post race
Warm down: stretch a bit. got a banana and granola bar. Went inside for that hot shower---bliss! What limited your ability to perform faster: weather Event comments: I'm sooo glad I got out of bed to do this race. I had a blast! If I can compete in a triathlon in 45 degree rain, some of which was torrential, well, I can do anything (well, almost). I last did this race 2 years ago five minutes faster, so I know the weather made everyone slower. This race sold out at 450 registrants -- 290 showed up on race day. Lots of smiles all around. This is a fun, first tri of the season. Last updated: 2006-05-09 12:00 AM

5:45 a.m.: rain is dripping onto the roof outside my bedroom window. I'm lying in bed, listening to the rain. Do I REALLY WANT to do this race in 45 degree rain? Hmmmm, it's Mothers' Day after all and I should be eating breakfast in bed and all... 6:00, Still thinking....aw hell, it's a short race, there's a place to hang out indoors and a hot shower on site afterwards. So I get up, have tried and true pre-race breakfast of cheerios with blueberries and coffee. I pack an enormous amount of stuff and head off to the race site, which was thankfully 12 minutes from my house.
Running back and forth from transition site, car, and pool...
Ran into Joe (onetherun) and Nikki a couple of times. It was really crowded inside... There were about 15 members from my triteam there too.
Race started around 8:20 a.m., with the fastest swimmers. I was #331 and entered the pool around 9:45.
I swam a bit in the diving well 5 minutes before starting the swim.
