Subject: Blogging how to, etiquette ?'s

I am thinking about blogging some of the educational ideas I make and try with my kids at home. I've never blogged before (besides my training blog on BT) and I'm not really sure where to start.

So of course I come here, to the people of COJ, who have more experience and expertise than all of the internet .

I'm more concerned about blogging etiquette, if I see an idea on someone else's blog, make it for my kids then post about our experience on my blog do I need to cite the original blog? I can't always remember where I read about the ideas we try but I would not want someone to feel I am stealing their idea. Also, if I reference someone else's blog do I need to let that person know?

What else do I need to know before I try this?

Are there places to set up blogs that are more user friendly than others?

I use wordpress.  I just like their blogging tools the best!

If I borrow something from another blog, I always link to the original post that I used.  I mention the site, etc.   I would let the other person know that I was citing their blog, but I have never had a problem since I give them credit and link to their site.  I don't want to infringe on copyright issues, including photos.

If photos are public domain, I don't worry about it.

My blog is currently down, but I am a fan of just getting started.

Stealing an idea is bad, citing a resource with link from another blog is appreciated.

I use Blogger (Google).

I read a lot of blogs and I am a librarian and tend to be "the copyright police", so here's my advice.

What I would do is say "Today we did a project I learned about from Crafty Cathy's blog. Here is a link to her instructions <link>.  Then I would proceed to blog about how it went for you with stories and pictures of you and your kids doing it.  I wouldn't include her pictures or text, unless given permission.  And with the link, why bother?

If I truly couldn't remember when I got the info, and couldn't trace it back using a web search, I would say "I got this from the internet, if anyone recognizes it please let me know and I will link to the source."

Generally:

I have a travel blog with Blogger. It was Blogspot and then it got eaten by Google.  The nice part is I can load pictures into Picasa and they are accessible easily for the blog and also for other things.   The web editor is marginal. I've learned to deal with it, my husband hates it.

My pet peeve - speak in the 1st person.    Please.

Good luck!

If photos are public domain, I don't worry about it.

If photos are posted "in public" they are protected by copyright, despite how easy they may be to steal.   "Public domain" is a very different thing and you'd really only be talking about pictures from historical society web sites.  Anything from a modern blog, while in public, are not "in public domain."    That might very well be what you're saying, but in the context her I thought it was worth clarifying.   This isn't really etiquette, it's law.

Oh, absolutely!  Thanks for clarifying it, I don't think my explanation read as I intended it too.  Laughing
