Subject: First Time 70.3 questions
I did my first 70.3s back in 2012 I think.

This forum was much busier then and I was here ALL the time. BT was my source of all things triathlon.

I haven't been as active on here recently although I try to pop in when I think of it. I took a year off from long course triathlon this year and I'm getting back into it this year. I'm trying to remember how I felt when I was getting ready for my first 70.3.

That's when I hired my first tri coach. I had used the BT plan to get me ready for my first Olympic tri and it worked ... I finished. Although I was actually one of the last 5 people off the bike course.

I remember ...or I think I remember that I was very nervous that I wouldn't be able to actually do the 70.3 distance and I remember or think I remember that I literally just couldn't imagine training or racing that long.

If there are folks on the forum who are getting ready for their first time 70.3s I'm curious how you guys are feeling and thinking.

I am prepping to train after the new year for my first 70.3. I am going to concentrate more on my swimming than I have in the past, as it is my weakness. I live in the Chicago area so I have to prep a little more with open waters to swim in the winter. I don't know if I am purchasing a plan or hiring a coach. Have to see what fits my budget. But I will be following this thread.

I did my first 70.3 last year. I was most intimidated by the overall amount of time the vent would take. It’s hard to trust your training will come together and allow you to continue on with physical exercise for 5+ hours when your longest training session was 3-3.5 hours. The swim was also nerve racking. It’s hard to swim 1.2 miles straight in training. Believing that all the broken up yards and meters would come together was a big concern.

At the end of the day all went well. Trust the training and put in the work. Stick to the plan on race day.

I was scared to death when I was training for my first 70.3.  I had completed two (2) marathons and had bonked on both of them.  I didn't know how I would make it through a 6-hour triathlon if I couldn't even get through a 4-hour marathon.  I was a good runner and had been winning my age group at 1/2 Marathons races for six years leading up to the 70.3 but hadn't done any competitive swimming or cycling and was starting from zero on both of them.  I enjoyed the training though.  I got to take weekend bike rides through beautiful scenery and got to speed down hills which was an exhilarating feeling.  Swimming every day on my lunch break I made new friends and it was a wonderful way to break up the workday.  I trained for 6 months for my 70.3 and found BT about 2-1/2 months into my training.  I joined one of the BT mentor groups and learned from the questions of other people in the group and when I got brave enough started to ask my own questions.  I didn't think that I would be totally ready to race in 6 months of training but I wanted to have the experience and just focused on what I could do to be as ready as I could be with my limited time to train.

These are great comments. I totally remember wondering if all the 100s and 200s in the pool would work for a long steady swim. One thing I remember is how LONG the swim looks when you first see it laid out on the course.

But the intervals really do work to get us ready. It is a leap of faith though to be sure.

Thanks you guys!

I remember getting my info packet and checking the day before my 70.3. Seeing the swim buoys and thinking "that doesn't look that bad". Little did I know that they were putting the buoys out and were not half way done with the outbound leg. :-0
