Pre-race routine:

Driving through traffic for about two and half hours. I left work at 3:30 and arrived at the Boulder Res just before the race start at 6 p.m. I was so out of whack. I barely had time to use the bathroom and put on my wetsuit. I didn't even know the course, I could barely see the buoys and I even missed them a couple of times. More on that later.
Event warmup:

When I got to the registration table they didn't have my name and then I had to go to another table to get my number and I didn't even know what my number was. It was crazy. Then I ran into Cogirl and that was fun.

Comments:

The swim was crazy. The waves were HUGE! I had never encountered such big waves before. It seemed everytime I came up for air I got a mouth full of water. It didn't help that I didn't have enough time to put my swim cap on correctly so I kept stopping to put it back on my head correctly. It was a mess. It was the worse swim start that I have EVER had. I almost turned around but I'M SO GLAD I DIDN'T. I didn't want a DNF by my name!

Comments:

I made a pact with myself. I would run until the turnaround. When I finally got to the turnaround, well, I kept running. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT I RAN THE ENTIRE 5K. And I had my fastest time ever. I'm so excited. I even sprinted at the end. It was so kick ass. Whoo Hoo! I'm a stud. I'm so proud of my run. NEVER in a million years would I have thought I'd do better on my run than my swim but I did.
What would you do differently?:

Run a little faster.

Event comments:

Well, I can't believe that I tried to turn around and not do this. I'm so excited that I ran the entire 5K. I mean, I've never done it before in a two sport race. Whoo Hoo.

Course: Now this is the part I missed and it showed. I was SUPPOSED to swim to buoy one around buoy two and back towards the beach. I swam around the two buoys and then went off to the left halfway around the lake by the boats. It was crazy. I must have swam an extra 300 meters.

Way to go - especially on the run!!!!

I can't imagine driving in traffic for two hours and then jumping right in to race - good job

Would you recommend this event/i.e. do it again?

Stace,

I'd recommend this event based upon three reasons:

  1. If you live less than 20 min from Boulder and DO NOT have to go through Denver to get there.
  2. If you are absolutely comfortable swimming in choppy open water. If you're not strong in your swimming I would bone up at Chatsfield first.Swimtime in a pool isn't going to cut it.
  3. If you want to challenge yourself. Though everyone was nice, most of the participants were "hardcore," meaning I saw very few people walking during the race (hence the reason that I didn't there in lies the challenge.)

And yes I am going to do it again next year.

Thanks Ovetta - I was wondering about how hardcore this race was - I was inimidated by the race results I looked up, and sounds like it is a pretty serious crowd. I've also hesitated about it because it's in Boulder - I could go the back way to get there, but think I'd still hit traffic. Anyhow, the last one's next week, so I think I'll wait til next year to try this one.

Interesting to hear your comment on how others not walking kept you motivated to run the whole thing - I think I might have been able to run the whole Danskin but everyone else was walking so I didn't feel as bad walking!!
