Those are good ideas, but man. Leo's an expert on global warming? Sheesh. What's next? W's an expert on supreme court nominations?

courtney_leone - 2005-10-28 8:19 AM

Did anyone watch Oprah yesterday? She had a pretty interesting show. Her guest was Leonardo DiCaprio who was on to talk about Global Warming. They gave a list of things to do to help protect planet earth. I thought I'd list them for anyone who is interested:

-You can buy 'Carbon Fluorescent' light bulbs instead of the ones we usually buy. They are a little more expensive than usual but will save you a ton of money in the end and use 66% less energy.

-Unplug your cell phone charger, hair dryer, coffee maker, toaster oven, ect when not in use. I had no idea that they sucked energy even while they are not in use.

Usually I am not too terribly concerned about Global Warming, but after watching that show, it kind of scared me a little. I just thought I'd pass on the information

Yeah. OK. So I hate hate hate how celebitys always get face time to talk about "issues" just because they are celebrities. I mean, who's the half brain that's sitting on their couch thinking, "well, if Leo says it's true, it must be true."

Couldn't Oprah find, you know, like a scientist or something? I'm not saying a Ph.D is the be all and end all of smart, but damn.

No I know, Courtney. And I'm really not meaning to piss on your thread. I think GW's a problem, probably. I just wish people were generally more inclined to listen to real experts than pseudo- or so-called experts.

courtney_leone - 2005-10-28 8:30 AMExpert or not, at least SOMEONE is bringing it our attention, which is great. He actually drives one of those electric cars and his entire house is eco-friendly. Its a start

WHATEVER!!!!! You just wanted to look at Leo

(just messing with ya court.)

Nothing wrong with following their tips! I save a flush every morning...start there.

courtney_leone - 2005-10-28 9:40 AM

Thing is, after Leo came out and introduced it, they had an expert of climate and global warming  from Princeton to come out to talk about it. All I cared about was the information and tips they were sharing. It wasn't just Leo talking about global warming

I couldn't have said it better. If I see one more know it all celebrity/actor preaching to me how I should live my life I'm gonna puke. Anyone seen 'Team America' ? funniest movie ever made.

and Oprah preaching about energy conservation? ppuuuhhhhlllleessseeee!!! she alone probably consumes more energy than 10 normal households combined with her 30,000 sf mansions, limos, jets, etc.

Exactly. Matt and Trey made the point better than I ever could.

I don't mind Oprah having a show about it. It's just a forum. Gotta invite the right people to the party, though.

Glad to hear it wasn't just Oprah. And yeah, I understand that she had to have a "name" on, cause no on'e going to tune in to her to see Ernest Poindexter.

Jim, It's a simple case of getting good PR for your cause. There seems to be a general mood of distrust of "intellectuals" in this country (witness the Republican snide/sly catch-phrase of "elitists" whenever they want to discredit an expert or intellectual). If the experts need to be introduced by a celebrity in order for people to LISTEN to them and not feel threatened by them, then that's what they should do. Simple PR.

I see LOADS of magazines with celebrities on the covers at my grocer's checkout stand. How often do you see an expert on global warming on the cover? Would anyone buy the magazine? Sex sells and I don't mind sex selling responsible consumerism.

Oh yeah I know. It still pisses me off, though. We don't trust the smart people, but we'll swallow any load of crap the dumb people tell us. Makes me think we should just go ahead and run amok. The earth'll eventually claim us as a species, and if  we've come to the point where dumb people rule, maybe it should happen sooner rather than later.

grumble grumble grumble...

Yeah, but what ticks me off is when they have MADONNA giving tips on motherhood (while still pregnant with her first baby that she brokered), and Christy Brinkley giving tips on MARRIAGE---yeah, she should know since she's been married, what? 4 or 5 times or something like that. I'll listen to Christy for hair and makeup tips, but don't talk to me about relationships. She has no credibility there....IMHO

I agree that it's PR to draw attention to it but I don't think that it has anything to do with people not trusting experts. Lobbiests for various causes, both left and right wing, are aware that "the masses" can be manipulated by celebrity hype.

One of my all time fav's, Sean Penn taking a few day trip to Iraq and now he's qualified to tell us all about the state of Middle Eastern affairs. Hey Sean, if it only takes a few days to have a detailed perspective, then I've got a damn PhD, get bent.

Sorry for the hijak, C.L. you seem to have struck a chord with a few people...

It doesn't HAVE to be that way! Am I idealistic or what? And I didn't mean to strike a chord, I was just sharing information. I just HAD to stick Leo's name in there, didn't I??

You are idealistic and that's okay. That is an endearing quality you have.

I guess us cynics are stirred up this morning.

My feeling about a lot of the celebrity hype is that you can get a celebrity to endorse almost anything if you promise him/her face time on TV or a magazine cover....So you want me to talk out against global warming....OK....you want me to speak in favor of drilling for oil in Alaska...OK....Just look at me while I'm talking and tell me I'm pretty.....

(I'm so cynical)
