In my opinion I think your right.... was the hurricane expert assocaited w/ the Cato Institute? www.cato.org

Bettylou - 2005-10-28 2:05 PM In my opinion, NPR tends to have a certain bias to their reporting (and I know you can say that about FOX, CNN and whoever.) I think they were disappointed that the hurricane expert didn't jump on the global warming bandwagon and instead attributed it to natural cycles in the weather.

Yeah, I am all about conserving energy because my damn electric bill was so high this summer.  And I am sure we could treat the planet quite a bit better too.  I just don't want Oprah and Leo telling me to do it.  Good message, poor medium.  And, it's friday and I too am bored.

I do what everyone else on this thread does: I see a celebrity talk about something that is common sense, and then get mad at them for saying it and making me feel guilty rather than just doing it. This fulfills my sense of superiority without sacrificing anything.

Whoops, my Personal Honesty meter is set WAY too high today!

Good point about the phone charger, Courtney. And now...mine's unplugged. Turned off a light that didn't need to be on while on the way back, too.

Using celebrity to bring to attention a cause they believe in = ok
Believing the celebrity is an expert on said cause because they are on tv = not ok

There are more hurricanes because of global warming = no evidence
Hurricanes are getting more intense because of global warming = evidence

Polar ice cap is melting = true
Our environment is changing because of global warming = true

Avg temp of the earth is warming = true
There is nothing we can do about it = not truish

Off the top of my head - the 2 biggest things it seems to me:

-Politicians have beat it into us that its too expensive/will stop the economy from growing or lower our standard of living because they don't want to take action or make unpopular decisions.

-People don't think they can make a difference (ex. how will my unplugging a cell phone charger stop global warming?).

I'm sure you and I disagree (political speaking) so let me says this... I recycle, it pisses me off when I see people litter, I turn off lights in my house (when I remember), I own cars that get avg mpg, I ride my bike to work when I can, I volunteer at animal shelters, I would like to adopt a portion highway around my home for litter control, etc...

Why other don't conserve? Good question... I'm a card carrying Christian conservative and I conserve. (fyi: not that my political or faith preference has anything to do with conserving out natural resources… but feel that people with my same political & faith affiliations have been tagged as slothful)

betsybromley - 2005-10-28 4:45 PM I want opinions on why so many people are so careless with the environment and why it seems so difficult to get us to conserve?

well i'll just take this opportunity to get my thoughts on existance out there SINCE IM A CELEBRITY ON BT AM I RITE:

1) existential Christianity is pretty frickin' great.
2) i would lay down in traffic for my friends and loved ones
3) if you don't fall into the group outlines in #2 then i don't care about you. feel free to get hit by a bus.
4) i have 3 characteristics i hate in people. ask me some other time and i'll tell you what they are. my very thoughts on human traits will reveal your soul and make your blood run cold.

well that was cheery!

First - like Oprah, don't like GWB.  Up and down on Leo (loved Guilbert Grape).

Second - don't believe in global warming - to track 2000 years or measurements is nothing in geological time.  Yes, the earth will reclaim us, not us the earth.

However, to sustain ourselves longer, conserving is necessary.  I hate waste - I recycle, I compost, I wash out my ziplock baggies and use them over.  But I make my living off of mining and see supplying the raw materials of our infrastructure as just as valid as using them to build something.

Often people don't understand that to sustain our lifestyles, it takes alot of resources, and conserving one thing often costs us in another.  Take hybrid cars - easy on fossil fuels, but great for the copper and nickel mining industries.  China has mandates on the % of cars that need to be built hybrid not because they are concerned about their environment but because they have large base metals reserves.

I want a bumper sticker on my scooter - "if it can't be grown, its gotta be mined".  Alot tamer than the "Earth First - we'll mine the other planets later".

You know, I'm really happy to hear that. Politically, I'm equally sure we'd disagree, but about all the things you listed--we agree. That's great. I very much enjoy talking with people whose political views differ from my own, as long as we can get beyond the bumper-sticker, sound-bite level that passes as political discourse these days. I often learn important things, moreso even than when I'm 'talking to the choir'< b/c I would never preach ).

Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you. It is an impression I have, despite working in an overwhelmingly conservative Christian office of people doing environmental work---everyone else around doesn't seem to think/do what you do. It makes me hopeful that there is common ground.

Also underscores the point that 'sides' are far more complex than pundits and talking heads would have us believe.

And this is a TRIATHLON website--that fact continues to blow my mind...
