I am totally stoked about my first tri! I got my bike about a week ago and have been trying to get my swim technique down...I am a trail runner by nature. I am getting ready to sign up for my first event - the Parris Island Sprint in March. It is asking me for a division. I am a big fella, so I know I will be in the clydesdale if I want ( I am 235lbs.). There is also a novice division for beginners (also me). There are no points accumulation in the novice, but I am not sure if that is a big deal or not. I do have an idea of what my times mos likely will be:

500M Swim - 10 min (or so)
13 Mile Bike - 40 Min (about 18mph)
5K Run - 24 Min ( I am anticipating having pretty fatigued legs at this point)

Would I be better off in the Clydesdale or novice division?

Thanks in advance

Which one do you think it would be more competitive? If the event has a website, try looking for last year's results and compare. I would not want to enter the novice category if I was going to win easily, I much rather have good competition

good luck

Another note is that the "novice" division is the last to head out at the start, so based on your times, I would think that you will spend your time passing quite a few people which could be frustrating..

Being one of the larger types myself, typically Clysedales are started near the beginning of the race...

Just another aspect to think of!

When I did my first race there was a novice category, and we got special schwag at the end - Congratulations Certificates on finishing our first triathlons, etc. We still participated in the heats according to our estimated times, but got special recognition throughout the race and especially as we crossed that finish line. Was kinda cool - made my first race that much more special.

I would go with novice.  You only get one chance at that category, so you might as well make the best of it.

Nice ride! You are likely to be better off in the novice if you have never experienced an OWS with a lot of people before. Looking back on my first tri, if I had been the last person in the water I would have been better off. Swimming laps in a pool is nothing compared to OWS with several hundred people. Some good advice here if you haven't seen it yet http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=103164&posts=16&start=1

I definitely agree..this one is in a heated pool....I will need to get more swim training under my belt before I do an OWS. I feel comfortable but just have to ctach my breath about every 100M.
