Subject: Hey 'yall from the Emerald City!
Hey everyone, I am here in Seattle and my best girlfriend somehow convinced me to do a "try a tri" in July. It is a 1/4 mile swim, 12 mile bike and 3 mile run. Well...I have always been a very active athletic person (ice skating and ballet my entire life until just a couple years ago) so I thought okay, I might be able to pull this one off. Then shortly after I agreed to these shenanigans, I got that walking Pneumonia, and my lungs were down for the count. I have been doing the "couch to sprint" training the past three weeks (well this is my third) getting ready for the 20 week training she and I are doing together starting next week, and I can't even run barely six minutes! I already feel behind and am bummed! Anyone have any advice or experience with being really sucky when it comes to endurance??

First- WELCOME TO BT! You already have two things going for you: training partner in your friend, and a plan to follow!  Don't think about the past--you're not behind, you have plenty of time to work from.  I'm sure with ballet and ice skating you have more endurance than you think--just not in these new areas...with time you'll see progress.  This week, 6 minutes, next week 10 minutes...just stick to the plan, feed of the motivation from your partner, and you will do GREAT! (remember to have fun in there too!)

Welcome! You will be suprised what your body will do. It will do twice what your mind will lead you to believe it can do! Good luck!

I thought "Oz" was the Emerald city. Hm.

Try-a-tri's are a great introduction to this crazy thing we're all mixed up in - 20 weeks is way-plenty of time to train, and don't feel so bummed about "being really sucky when it comes to endurance"; we've all been there. In fact, I think I start out each season feeling like that after taking some time off at the end of the previous season, so don't sweat it.

You've taken a smart approach by using a training plan. Don't worry about falling behind - keep at it and your endurance will improve.

Good luck and welcome to BT!

Welcome to the sport. And watch out, it can get addicting!

Like the others have said, you'll be surprised at what your body can do, and how fast it gets used to training, once you start pushing it. But then again, I'm talking to an athlete, so you already know that. Just follow your plan, and the endurance will kick in.

I hear you on the pneumonia, too. It took me out for almost a month and I'm on day 4 of easing back into all this.

Welcome, 20 weeks is plenty of time for you to build.  Recovering from pneumonia myself and I have a half mary in 6 weeks...Figure it's my first so the goal has changed from being super competitive  to finishing and take it as a PR since it will be the first half mary.  You do have a lot more endurance than you realize, it just takes a bit to dig in deep to find it.  Enjoy the process and training with your friend.

The thing to remember is that you get in shape, and then the other 90% of triathlon is mental toughness. If you go to the race report forum, it is chock full of really inspirational stories about people gutting it out and finishing when they weren't sure they could, performing far above their training level, personal besting on a tough course, etc., and it's all mental toughness, the desire to keep going. Use your training to build confidence in your ability to mentally push yourself, because that's what's going to get you through a triathlon, the ability to feel physical pain in your stomach, or leg, or head, or knee, or thigh, or shin, or arm, most probably all of them together, and say "hey, this isn't bad, KEEP PUSHING." Everyone can get in shape. Convincing yourself to push on under duress is what triathlon is all about.
