Subject: 34x28 or 36x28?
I'm reading a good interview with Levi Leipheimer about going up the Angrilu in the Vuelta tomorrow. The Angrilu features a 23% pitch during a 10K climb with some other really steep sections.

Levi mentions that he might use a 34x28 or 36x28 for that climb. Is that for a compact crank or are these tiny tiny climbing gears? I mean, 23%! Thats like going up Mount Washington @ the top.

I only use Standard gearing configurations (39x25) and am unfamiliar with compact crank configurations, so I dont' know.

My small ring on my compact is 34. I have a cassette that is 11-28 sram makes that is outside the specs Shimano has but can be adjusted to work well.

I'm guessing that is what he is riding...it would kill me to ride in my 34 and 28..he is super strong.

I'm looking at doing a TT up Mount Washington as part of a stage race and parts are 18% grade. I need to figure out different gearing for my bike or my legs will be dead for the other two races that weekend. I know some folks go with 34-34 and they are stronger cyclist than me.

Sometimes those guys will ditch their current bike and switch bikes with easier gearing....

Should be fun to watch at cycling.tv

The Angrilu is just cruel and unusual punishment ...... I really wish Versus would show the Vuelta live like they used to.  Any gearing goes it is that hard.  David Millar stopped a few meters short of the finish and sat down on the course in protest of the damn thing!

but you know you want to climb it!

i'll stick mountain bike gears on my road bike and ditch the brakes if that is what it takes to get up it.

....maybe not ditch the brakes, there might not be any guard rails that high up....

I did old stage road in Boulder last weekend in my 39/26, I am pretty sure my RPMs were in the low 20s. I think some kids walked by faster than I was going. Apparently it is about 14%.

20+%, boggles the mind.........

You're likely going to want a triple. Discard the 30tooth inner ring and drop to a 24 tooth (They're available in the right bolt pattern). Then use the 11-28, but be sure the gaps on the big cogs are small enough. I used a 12-27 which is 27-24-21 and spent most of the hill in the 24 and used the 27 for a brief respite from the pain.
