About a month after that I am also looking to run my first marathon. The tri is one of my A races, whereas I just want to have fun with the marathon. I am planning on following the same plan I used for my first tri, Mark Fitz's Tri magazine stuff, but also incorporate some longer runs between now and then to get ready for a marathon a month after Wildflower. I will start building my run distance now to about 15 miles for when I start my training plan. After that I will keep my weekly long run per the plan somewhere tween 15 and 20 miles to get ready for the mary. My biggest concern is that adding miles in the "marathon" pacing zone will not let me maximize my performance in the Wildflower "half marathon" pacing zone. I want to do the marathon, but don't want to limit my growth at this tri distance. Will making my long weekly run considerably longer than planned stunt my development for this race, or am I ok as long as I don't build the distance too quickly? My first tri was the Vineman HIM and I had decent times in the swim and bike, but the "wheels came off" during the run. I want to make sure that doesn't happen again. A big portion of the "wheels coming off" was a pretty good crash that took 6 weeks to recover from only 8 weeks out from the race, which I hope I don't repeat again. thanks guys, and gals. |

Elite 3658![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: First Mary one month after HIM?I wouldn't do it. Since it is your first time at each distance you will do better if you concentrate on each race individually. It's hard enough to learn all the nutrition stuff and balance the training without worrying about a marathon. Also, you don't know how long it will take you to recover from the HIM. You may not feel up to squeezing one more long run in before you taper for the marathon. Why not run the marathon this winter? |

I got the nutrition down the first time, but your point about the recovery and a taper are wel made, it took my about a week of nothing to get back at it after last race. Good points, anyone else? |

I did something similar but had 9 weeks between the HIM (my first ever) and Mary and actually didn't even plan on the mary til late July, but in those weeks I ran the half mary at Steelhead 70.3 as a relay in early Aug, then did an Oly in the third week of Aug. I had added long runs to the Oly training, then got some good runs in after the Oly buidling to just over 18 mile long runs 3 weeks out from the trail mary, which fell just a few days after the Oly. I signed up for the mary just to get an idea of the pain involved (planning on my first IM in 2009) not to mention I had the weekend off, and it was a trail mary with a decent amount of climbing so I got the pain I was looking for. It was tough, but like you I was just looking to make it a fun type run with no pressure and I love trail running and had a good time. I would think since you have a lot more time to work with then I did you could get your run mileage built enough over the winter and during your HIM training, that it should be doable as a fun event. Good luck Edited by rottieguy 2008-10-06 9:58 AM |

Expert 1030![]() ![]() Miller Place, Long Island | Subject: RE: First Mary one month after HIM?I'm in the middle of doing this exact thing. I finished my second HIM yesterday and I'm doing the NYC Marathon in a few weeks. If I could do it all over again, I probably wouldn't. It has been tough to balance the training for both and every time I really pushed it yesterday (missed my 6hr goal by 5 minutes) I kept thinking in the back of my head, oh, I have a long run next weekend. Like you though, the HIM was my "A" race for the season and I'm doing the marathon for the experience... it will be my first. It has just been tough to focus on the HIM training while also having to train for a marathon. |

I was supposed to do this same marathon last year but had that bike wreck just before. Wildflower is a kick in the pants as far as HIM distances go. I think I will just focus on getting my miles built up in the run and get a few bikes in a week between now and my training plan for Wildflower start, then go from there. thanks |

286![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Subject: RE: First Mary one month after HIM?I did my 1st HIM Sept 7, and am also running the NYC Marathon. In my training, my longest run was prob about 12 miles, so I had a decent amount of ground to make up in a short amount of time. Seems like if you add those longer run you'll be ok from a planning standpoint. However, I did underestimate the amount of time it would take my body to recover and feel 100% again after the HIM (took 2-3 weeks). I would skip the Marathon and focus on the Tri (much more fun). |

Doing it one month after an HIM pretty much guarantees it will not be. When you do your first marathon, give it the time and training it deserves and demands. |
