Subject: Pain right below knee cap

Hi - I went for a run this morning and while running, I started experiencing jabbing pain right below my knee cap.  This is the first time I've experienced this and am not sure what to think.  Has anyone else had a similar experience?  I did a search for "knee pain" and there are a lot of threads about knee pain but I couldn't find any about pain right below the knee cap.  The pain would come and go.  It was weird.  I decided to stop and walk back home because I don't want to injure my knee knowing I have a triathlon coming up on Nov. 30th.  Any advice would be welcome.

sounds like runner's knee to me, which means that your knee cap isn't tracking correctly.  . just like everything else, its an overuse thing. it happened to me a couple weeks before my half-marathon, and i just iced it a lot, and got a pateller strap from k-mart for 12$ that helps a whole lot.

Bottom inside of kneecap on the front of your leg? That's runner's knee. Bike more and build your thighs up and it'll go away. Until then, one of the knee braces from CVS or another drug store works wonders or at least did for me until I built my thighs up.

First off,  I would make sure you get the correct diagnosis.

I suffered with ITBS last year, the pain is generally on the outside of the knee.   ITBS is not an easy fix -  I had several visits to the physio - but as soon as I tried to run on it the pain would reappear after a couple of miles.   In the end,  I had to rest completely from running for a couple of months - though I was OK on the bike.

Thank you everyone - for your replies.  I will go see a doctor just to check on this.  Have a great weekend!

I had the same problem when I started marathon training. As others have said, ice after running. I also use Cho-pat knee straps just below my knee. 22 marathons later and no problems. I still wear the straps on my long runs +10 mi just for protection. Good luck.
