Subject: gu or something needed for a sprint?
My first sprint is coming up in a couple of months and I am wondering if it would be worthwhile to use energy gels or drink. I used Cytomax for my half marathon and liked it very much. I picked up some Gu to try during my brick workout today to see how I like that (for some reason can't stomach electrolyte drink after a swim, will try Gu and water instead). Thoughts?

For a sprint, you SHOULD be able to get by with just water and whatever you ate for breakfast. If you have been eating well, and have a solid dinner and breakfast before the race, there should be enough in the tank to complete it. That being said, if you do want to play with race nutrition, do it now to see what works and what doesn't. Nothing new on race day...

For my first (and only) sprint, I diluted gatorade & water 1/2 &1/2 in my 24 oz bike bottle. It took me over an hr to finish, and it was very hot outside. It seemed to work out fine.

I see a lot of people slamming a GU right before a sprint start. I imagine it gives them that extra burst. Or maybe they didn't eat breakfast, I dunno.

I personally don't need anything but a normal breakfast for a sprint distance, but everyone's different. Try it! But try it in the morning like around the race time to see how you react. Sometimes mornings do funny things to tummies.

Oh, I also got into the habit of putting GU20 in my bike bottle for every race. It's a really light sports drink that I have lots of, like the taste, and it's what I train with.

My nutrition for a sprint, big boy style.

Bagel & PB with water as soon as I wake up (at least 2 hours before racetime)

Big coffee & 1/2 bottle of gatorade in car.

Other 1/2 of a gatorade while yapping pre-race.

I hit two gus during the first half of the bike.  I only drink water for on the bike.

Usually one or two waters during run.

Eat as much free food and booze as they will give me after the race.

My first sprint took me 1:46. That's long enough that I should have downed a gel on the bike. Live and learn.
