I finished my first sprint  in June and finished my first Olympic today.  Running was my weakest area in both events.
I used to be a really good runner- State qualifier in high school.  It's been 22 years.  Now I have no kick or stride.  Any suggestions on how to improve those areas or other suggestions?  Thanks!!

Were you a state qualifier in sprint or longer distance?  Either way, if you are patient and run concistently it will come back.  I took a 21 year hiatus as well.  Running has a lot of factors that enter into talent, but one thing for certain weight is usually a limiter when you compare your old self to your new self.  It does not affect the other sports so much, but running it is a big part of the equation.  Keep it up, be consistent and avoid overdoing it.  Aches and pains are normal, but if your stride or gait is compromised take a day or two off.  It will come back if you are patient.

Thanks for the insight.  I ran 1/4 and 1/2 mile in high school.   I have been putting more time in the swim and bike since I wasn't as familiar.  I'm doing the 1/2 marathon in Chicago August 2nd.   I will be focusing my training on running for the next couple of weeks.  I hope the stride comes back.

I would also bring back some of the run drills you used to do in high school.

If you want to add speed or have a 'kick' at the end of the race I would add some speedwork like a fartlek or interval training.  Hills can also be used here to do the same thing.  I would look on runnersworld or other running websites to see what types of workouts you can integrate into your training as they will vary in length and difficulty.

If you are looking to work on form, try this:  http://www.posetech.com/ It's like Total Immersion for swimmers and is a big help.

Good luck!

Thanks for the POSE link.  I was able to watch a conference video by a coach in Irvine.  I focused on just posture today and was able to shave off 6 minutes on one of my pre- race routes.  8.77 in 1:27 compared to 1:33.  I didn't realize how much I was bending forward, and I was also looking at my feet alot.  Not sure why I was doing that.  I felt more like floating today than clompping along.
Thanks again,
Kelly

Do you do any stride work?  I have found that the older I get the more important they are to me.  Here are a few links as to what they are, how to do them, and why some find them important.

I hope this helps.  Good luck. - Ray

Thanks Ray.  I incorporate speed drills into swimming and biking, however I have neglected it with my running.  The recommended links are going to be helpful.
Thanks,
Kelly
