So I planned on going for a bike ride to work in order to bring my truck home. Nogo.. rain for the 3rd night in a row. I decided to go to the pool instead. My son
(10
) wants to go so I thought, cool, I can have him help me track laps. I start grabbing stuff; towel, goggles, HRM, ear plugs, nose clips, bathing suit, water bottle, etc. He is talking a mile a min and I am distracted so I forget my towel while helping him find his water bottle.
I get to the pool and no biggie on the towel. I'll just use a gym towel. He has a little stopwatch so I told him just to put a slash every time I complete a lap. I told him that once his stopwatch hits 5 min, to underline the laps that I've already done, then simply start a new line of slashes for the rest of the laps.
Well, I started off horribly. It was like I was completely mechanical in my swim stroke. I felt like I was gasping for air for some reason. It took about 4 laps before I calmed down and started keeping my chin tucked, reached further, rotated my hips.. etc. It started smoothing out and then my son is waving his arms. I stop and he is talking but I can't hear. I have to pull out my ear plugs and he says, "that's 5 laps." I was confused at first but then I realized, he mixed up 5 laps with 5 min. No biggie, I'll just keep going. I get my stroke back and I'm feeling good. My hand is brushing my thigh at the end of the stroke and I'm reaching. I feel like I'm picking up speed and WHACK! My hand hit something along my leg! OMG.. my wallet and cell phone are in my swim trunks pocket. Ahhhh crap! I stop and grab them out I briefly inspect the cell phone and there is water pouring out of every opening. I pulled out the battery and slid them over to my son. I pulled out my ear phones and told him to just set it on the chair and not worry about it.
I get started again and my son starts waving again. "That's another 5 minutes" he says." I stop and explain that he doesn't have to keep time anymore. He just has to track laps. Sigh...
Anyway, I hit my stride and it really feels good. The stroke is feeling natural and I'm pushing it harder than ever. Still, my breathing is good and I know my heard isn't pounding anything like when I started. I rotate back for air an my son is yelling something at me. I stop and pull out one earplug. "18 laps." LOL.. OK, well thanks. At least I know there is only two more to go. I would have preferred to just flag me at 20 but he's doing as well as he knows how so it's all good. I hit 20 and stop my HRM. Somehow through all that disaster of a workout, I still shaved 3 minutes off of my 1000yd time. LOL
