Pre-race routine:

big pre race detail was to decide to go!! 0430 came early and the first thing I heard was the WIND blowing!! looked out side and saw the rain pouring down in the darkness. hmmm....that warm bed sure was looking good!!! But....resisted the tempatation and moved forward.
Ate oatmeal and a banana and juice in the car on the way. Drove 1 1/2 hrs to the site in the rain. Nice , enjoyable drive actually. No issues, no backseat drivers, just the music and my thoughts.
Event warmup:

Found the race site, Nice site actually, right on a beach and rural farming areas of south county Rhode Island. Signed up, tried to keep warm and dry until the start. A bit of stretching and strides.
Run
  • 31m 56s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 09m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Consciously took it easy on the run. Ran my own race, paced myself, said hello's to the volunteers. Kept a steady pace, jsut enjoying the scenery and pacing myself.
What would you do differently?:

get a light goretex shell, the jacket I had was good but not gortex and was too heavy and didn't breath good. But it did the job for the whole race.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

smooth transition, no issues really. Difficult to run one handed with the bike because the wind want to blow the bike out of my hands. I mean winds were 30-40 mph!!!
What would you do differently?:

nothing

Comments:

didnt push, just tried to be as aero as possible in the headwind. Keep a good comfortable cadence, saving for the run
What would you do differently?:

nothing really.
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

quick transition as there werent that many people around. easy in and out.
Run
  • 33m 52s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs were a bit off sync from the run so took a while to adjust, maybe more than usual. But just enjoyed the course, thanks the volunteers, shook hands along the way, those folks looked cold!!
What would you do differently?:

zippo
Post race
Warm down:

Immediately changed into dry clothes. Grabbed some grub and headed out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rain, strong winds.

Event comments:

Very glad I did this race. Rain and wind was a good experience. Didnt kill me, I didnt melt, shouldnt catch a cold. Had a good realxing time. I did not know the course so took it easy to get the feel of it. Really wish this race director would mark the miles on the run. This is my one big pet peave w. FIRM.

Wow, you're my hero, Glennie!

That race should have been re-named Duathlon in the Crapola Weather.  I don't think I could have stayed on my bike! Did anyone have this trouble?

Fantastic job, mister!

Its conditions like those that will better prepare you for the next race.  Sounds like you approached it with the right frame of mind, too.  Great race, Glen!
