"The bicyclists were headed westbound on Lincoln Trail Boulevard in Radcliff about 9 p.m. when they were struck by a car"

9 pm is a really really bad time to be out riding a bicycle.

I don't know the road, or the area, but around my neighborhood, there are plenty of recreational riders out for a causal family ride in the neighborhood in the evening -- and it sounds like that's what this was, not a training ride.

I'm now officially depressed.   Reading the last story made me want to just lie down -- some of the online comments from people on that site were almost as depressing as the story itself.

IMKY officials:  Please take note.

Be careful out there everyone.

From the newspaper in Radcliff, they were hit from behind.  No arrests have been made.  The driver gave blood for drug testing.

I have obsessed on the Triathlon bike killing.  From either the paper or one of TV news, the passenger said that they had stayed up all night drinking and smoking pot.  The film of the killer being arrested showed him about to pass-out, nodding off in the police car, shortly after being arrested.  This guy was destined to kill someone.  He was out of control with 2 DUI in just over a month.  It just happened to be "one of us."  It could have been a pedestrian, another driver, a motorcyclist, kids,...

I had just about come to grips and gotten over my fear.  It was not about being a cyclist.  It was about an out-of-control killer.  I had planned on riding about a 20 miler this afternoon.  Then I read about this one.  CRAP!

The Radciff/Hardin County newspaper said a full report would be available tomorrow.

From the local newspaper here in town:

Police said none of the bicyclists were wearing helmets, reflective clothing, or using lights of any kind on their bikes to alert motorists to their cycling. Such safety devices are required for bicycles riding at night, according to Propes, who regularly rides his bicycle on public roads.

Also:

The third cyclist struck by the vehicle Evans drove was a 20-year-old Radcliff man who was cradling his 23-month-old son while pedaling along Lincoln Trail Boulevard.

Yep, a tragedy for sure, but also why I'm always yelling at bicyclists (of all ages) to wear a helmet.  And I'm particularly guilty of yelling at kids to ride/act more safely.  If that makes me a cranky old man, so be it.

I saw three ladies last night riding, with helmets, but no lights, two were riding double-file.  I thought about slowing along-side and saying "Single file! and where's your lights?" but they probably would've thought I was one of "those people" who yell at cyclists.

Be careful out there folks!

This happened in my hometown. The rd is a 4 lane road with a grass median. They were in the left hand lane when they were struck. Its a terrible accident, but one that could be easily avoided with common sense. The speed limit on that rd is 40 in that area, but its a perfectly straight, flat stretch. They are saying speed or alcohol was not involved.
