Subject: Wet suit in a pool?
Hi all,  I am getting ready for my first tri, and I just bought a wet suit.  I want to practice swimming in it before the race, but my only training available is in a pool.  This may sound dumb, but am I OK to wear the suit in the pool, or will the chemicals in the water ruin any of the rubber?

My wife says the chemicals in the potomac river are probably worse, but I wanted to run it by you guys first.

Thanks for the help.

I had to do the same thing last year. Wetsuit was fine, just rinse well and run under the shower afterwards (inside out as well). Warning, you will overheat quickly in the pool. I could only do about 1,000 yards max before I couldn't take it anymore. You may get some looks at the pool, but let them wonder what your doing I built confidence knowing that I would not be trying something new on race day. Only had to try it twice to get used to it.

Have done it myself.  You are 100% right to want to practice with it before the race...

x2. If you can do your swim in the morning, it will help delay the inevitable overheating.

I wouldnt make it a regular thing to use it in the pool, as the chlorine will start to break down the neoprene after a while. But its totally fine here and there (in fact, even trisports allows you "one free swim" in a pool if you buy a suit through them. They just ask that you rinse it well before returning..so that should tell you something).

Definitely practice with it if its all you got, and definitely rinse well. It will be fine. I have done this a few times, and my suit is still holding up!

You might also check with the pool staff.  Some pools won't allow wetsuits, citing all kinds of different reasons (floatation, hygiene, etc.)  The wetsuit should survive a couple swims in a chlorinated pool without any problems, but do take care of your investment.

Huh? why wouldnt they let you have a wetsuit in a pool? Hygiene? dont understand that one. Floatation? huh?

I dont doubt that pools come up with weird rules for random reasons...but just dont get that one. And like how many people even wear a wetsuit in a pool that it has to be an actual rule???
