What do you do race week? How much training? Modify your diet?

I am a sprinter and believe in the "taper". Assuming a Sunday race, I cut my workouts by probably close to 30%, lighten the intensity, take Friday completely off (in addition to probably one other day during the week, so two off days). I do a check-ride on my bike for about 20 minutes (light spin, not a hard gear, higher cadence) on Saturday to keep my legs fresh and to make sure my bike is in good order. I cut back on the food intake as well for most of the week in order to stay close to race weight, but I eat a good amount of carbos on Friday night, some carbos on Saturday, but a good amount of protein with my final meal.

Works for me. Your results may vary. Good luck!

I do something similar. I have a race on Saturday so I had my last hard run Monday and a fairly hard bike today (Tuesday). Will take off today and Friday and do something light on Thursday. May spin my bike on Friday just for a check that the wheels aren't rubbing, etc.

You question is very open ended.  Not to pick on you too much but really a few things determing what happens on race week in my opinion.

1. What point in the season is the race?  Early season rest is differnt than rest at the end of the season.  How much base do you have and how much volume are you doing currently?  Are you already in a recovery/unload week or are you in the middle of a heavy week of training?

2. What type of race is it that you are talking about.  Is it an A, B, C for fun race?

3. What are your goals for the race?

I think if you follow the three points above you can very easily figure out what needs to be done or race week.

Tapering for races if done correctly is very effective.  But be careful here.  Once your done with your taper, usually for an A priority race, you need to rebuild your fitness again.   A lot of people like to think that they are tapering in theory but they really have no clue about how the process truly works.  In any give racing season you really might only get 2-3 solid taper's in.  Racing season = May - Oct here in NJ.

If you find that you are tapering more than that odds are you need to rethink your training and racing plan.

Let me know if you have any questions.

For no A races I train right through my weeks.  Making sure that the volume from the race fits into my weekly goal volume.  For A races which happen 1-2 times a year for me...I taper for as little as 1 week for a sprint and as much as 3 weeks for 70.3....
