Subject: What should I sell my road bike for?

I bought my road bike last year (Sept. 2010) and I am looking to sell because I am upgrading to a triathlon bike. It is a Specialized Secteur Elite (black and white in color), 61cm aluminum frame with carbon forks. The bike comes with Shimano 105 components. I purchased the bike for a little over $1500 and have just added brand new carbon Profile Design T1 + Viper aero bars worth $200.  I am very meticulous and have took extra good care of this bike so it is in excellent shape.

I am not sure how much to sell it for or what I should/could get out of the bike.  Any ideas or help?

I know $ may be an issue, but would you consider keeping it and having tri and road specific bikes?

Did a quick search on your bike.  It retails for $1400 on specialized's web site...so regardless of what you paid...that's where you likely need to start from.

61cm size is a bit tricky.  There isn't a high demand for a frame that big, but at the same time, I doubt there is a huge supply of new or used bikes in that size either.  That may or may not work in your favor as far as asking price.  In any case, I would say a fair price for used would be about $800.  Given that retail is $1400...it's very likely that someone could get a brand new 2011 or 2010 on closeout for 20% off...or roughly $1150.  So used would have to be cheaper than that.

Also, as far as the bars...I would recommend selling them separately to get maximum value.  The Secteur is a relaxed geometry bike...so the chances of a prospective buyer (and a 61cm buyer at that) who even wants aero bars on the bike is pretty slim.  I would guess you could get about $100-120 for the bars sold separately.

FWIW...I had a 2009 specialized allez elite also with 105.  Retailed for $1500, but I only paid $1215 on closeout.  Sold it earlier this year to upgrade for $600.  Sold it to a friend of a friend...so I cut him a slight deal...but I doubt I could have gotten much more than $725 on the open market.  Bike was in good shape...but not pristine...had a few scratches here and there from tipping over when learning clipless.

keeping it is a viable option as many argue that road bikes are better for climbing/hilly courses. I would say for 1 year of use and the model year (was it the 2010 model or the 2011 model that just came out as that will make a difference as well) I would say anywhere between 800-1200 would be fair depending on your local market. It all depends on what someone is willing to pay for it though so I would start at the slightly higher end and see what sort of action you get on it.

Or you could just send it to me as a tax write off...

I sold a similar Allez (105 group compact) for $700 in June. Bought it March 2010.

I think starting around $800ish is a good ballpark, but be prepared to drop the price some if needed.

Just another point of reference.

Had a 2007 trek, retail was $1,450, paid $1,050 on closeout, sold for $700 in 2011.
