Subject: Pull Buoy for swim workouts - ideas?
I'm still pretty new to swimming, and I've recently discovered the pull buoy and have started using it for swim workouts. I feel that it's improving my stroke, but I don't really know the best way to incorporate it into my workouts.

Can anyone give me some ideas as to how to incorporate the buoy into my workouts? Also, what should I be concentrating on when using it?

Pull Bouys rock.

You generate most of you power in swimming from your upper body so using a pull bouy is a good idea.

You could do some easy 50 yd sets using the bouy.  Just be sure you get in full stroke, i.e. push all the way down to your thigh.

Pull buoys are good, but don't get in a habit of relying on them. They help increase your speed, due to the fact that they give you a better body position and you're legs don't drag.  But obtainingg good body position is something that you also need to work on without using one.

I like to mix pulling (using a buoy and swim gloves) with kicking (using a kickboard). I do 5 x 200, where 1, 3, and 5 are pulling free/crawl, and 2 and 4 are kicking (50 fly, back, breaststroke, free). You could do any combination of lengths - 50s instead of 200s, whatever, but the mix is good.

I freaking love the pull buoy. I'll often throw in a 50pull in between long sets (with a 50 of kick as well), (I find that by doing so it reminds my body how to sit in the water if I've started slacking out of fatigue) or, if I feel my form turning to sh-t in the middle of a long set, throw in a 25 or 50 during that set to mentally "reset" how I'm suppose to feel in the water.

This is the main reason why I am looking to use the pull buoy more. I already do some fist or fingerdrag drills in between my long set, so I will add the buoy in there.

half, 3/4 and full catch up can also be done with the pullbuoy.

Swim Workouts for Triathletes in a Binder by Gayle Bernhardt......great book. Start off doing the B workouts and then work up to the A sets. Great mix of pull, kick, free, drills, and some other fun stuff. Keeps swim workouts fun and you don't have to go through making them up as you go.
