The campaign is designed to be provocative and that’s what it is. Free speech, whether it’s an ad campaign or an art exhibit or the lyrics in a song can be like that sometimes.

It’s obviously a strong statement and it’s intended to get attention and provoke discussion, which it’s clearly been successful doing.

If they did that to anyone else, there would be lawsuits until the trumpet of doom.

How sad.

As someone who works in the advertising industry, I can tell you exactly how this campaign came about. Some industry creatives wanted to create a campaign that would win awards and advance their careers. The easiest way to do that is to creative a provocative, pro bono liberal agenda PSA campaign.

They then shopped it around to every university they could until they found one with a liberal-minded administration that would agree to put their name on it. The motivation of the liberal profs is to gain some street-cred with their liberal buddies who have more prestigious jobs at more prestigious universities to show they're working to advance the cause of social justice as well, even from their remote corner of the country.

In the end, the only result is that some advertising creatives win a few bucks, get a few ads to add to their portfolios and then go hunting for higher-paying jobs.

It actually came about from the YMCA Duluth and it wasn't pro bono, but why let facts get in the way of a specious comment?

A comment which, I'd suggest, would be very much appreciated here.

They're bound to appreciate your liberal use of the word "liberal" in the comment, so that's a bonus.

Actually, it came about when when a Duluth-based advertising agency "partnered" with the City of Duluth and a coalition of local social justice groups, though the City of Duluth denies providing funding and the other groups aren't talking. I will guarantee the creative was provided pro bono. It is then up to the groups to decide how much they want to actually run the ads, which constitutes "sponsorship". Usually these groups can sweet-talk a few media outlets to provide some comp space, which they can write off as a donation for space they couldn't sell anyway. Everybody gets something-- the ad agency gets ads it can enter for awards, the groups get to feel good about getting their important message out there, the media companies can get a nice write-off.

Administration members of at the Universities of Duluth and Superior then picked up the campaign and ran it in their student newspapers, which, of course, didn't cost them a thing either... until members of the community and alumni staff started complaining and threatening to halt donations. That's when the University of Duluth ended their support of the campaign calling it "divisive" and "alienating". Of course, that's exactly what it is, as all 18 of the original coalition partners eventually agreed, and also withdrew their support for the creative strategy.
